Tyrone football legend Peter Canavan will not be standing in the West Tyrone by-election.

The two-time All-Ireland winner had been tipped to step forward as an MP candidate for Sinn Féin following Barry McElduff's recent resignation.

McElduff became embroiled in a social media controversy which resulted in his suspension from Sinn Féin on January 8th before confirming his resignation on Monday morning.

Canavan, who proposed McElduff in the Northern Ireland Assembley last March, has since confirmed to Ryan McAleer of the Ulster Herald that he will not be standing in the first Parliamentary by-election to be held in the North since 2013's Mid-Ulster by-election.

"I have not been contacted by anyone to stand in the forthcoming election nor do I have any desire to do so," Canavan stated.
