Hurling-Shinty: Scots finish with a flourish

Scotland's Kevin Bartlett

Scotland 1-11

Ireland 1-9

Scotland came from eight points down at Bught Park in Inverness to win the senior hurling-shinty series for the fourth year running.

Favoured by a strong wind, the hosts produced a stirring late comeback which culminated in Kevin Bartlett sending over the winning score.

Ireland dominated the opening half of the hybrid contest to lead by 1-7 to 0-2 at the break. Indeed, they led for all but seven minutes of the game.

Danny Cullen (Donegal), Damian Casey (Tyrone), Darragh Clinton (Westmeath) and Brian Byrne (Kildare) all shot points before Cullen grabbed the opening goal. The Scots had the wait until the 33rd minute for their first score from Bartlett (a two-pointer) before Clare's David McInerney replied to leave Ireland in a commanding position at the break.

Another brace of two-pointers from Bartlett on the restart narrowed the gap before Andrew MacCuish and Tipp's Jason Forde exchanged points. However, a scrambled goal from Glen Mackintosh marked a big turning point in the game.

Two quick points from Roddy MacDonald had the sides level before Bartlett fired over another two-pointer, which is awarded for striking the ball off the ground, to hand the Scots the win.

The Scots also won their camogie match against Dublin, which preceded the annual hurling-shinty international.
