Galway centre-back Gearóid McInerney says the All-Ireland champions' long wait to get into the winners' enclosure should still keep them hungry for success over the coming years.

The Tribesmen ended a 29-year famine to take the Liam MacCarthy Cup west this past September when they overcame Waterford's challenge at Croke Park.

Now Micheál Donoghue's men are mere four weeks away from a new campaign starting up again and McInerney says there won't be a lack of hunger from the group for more silverware.

"We were so long waiting, we got it, and it's great and we will all enjoy it. But we'll relax and be calm and go about our business and we won't get carried away," he told the Irish Examiner.

"We'll try do the best we can for the next few years. That's what retirement is for, when you retire you can think on those things and enjoy them more but for now we'll keep pushing and try keeping adding to our tallies of honours."
