Louth stalwart Andy McDonnell has taken an indefinite break from inter-county football.

Manager Wayne Kierans confirmed to the Irish Independent after his side's O'Byrne Cup first round victory over Meath that the former captain won't be involved for the time being, but stressed that the door remained open for him to return.

"We have lost Andy," Kierans said.

"He has been one of the mainstays of the team for the last few years so that is obviously a blow, but I've had some very good conversations with him over the last few weeks.

"He is not saying it's over forever, but he's under pressure a lot of pressure work-wise at the moment so he is not involved with us. But who knows after Christmas or into the championship we'll see how it is. But for the likes of Andy, it's a cliche, the door will always be open."
