GAA President John Horan during 2019 Congress

John Horan says respecting and accepting members of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) must be a priority for the GAA.

Addressing almost 1,000 people, including 130 overseas delegates, at Congress in Wexford today, the GAA president touched on the subject when saying: “We have a huge presence in Irish life which impacts very positively on people and long may this be the case.

“Another area on our horizon will be the protection and respect which we show to members of the LGBTQ community who are involved in our games."

Donegal's 2012 All-Ireland winning defender Eamon McGee, who was a leading campaigner for a Yes vote in the marriage equality referendum in 2015, claimed in an interview in 2016 that the GAA still has a "long way to go" in accepting gay members.
