Campbell hails Derry's never-say-die attitude

Derry will now face Cavan in the next stage of the Ulster U17FC competition.

Derry manager Paddy Campbell praised his team after their dramatic comeback victory over Monaghan in Saturday's pulsating Ulster U17FC preliminary round clash at Celtic Park.

The Oak Leafers twice recovered from big deficits to snatch a 2-14 to 2-13 extra-time victory thanks to Johnny McErlain's last-minute goal.

"Sometimes systems and tactics go out the window," the Donegal native told the Irish News.

"It's about character sometimes, and you can't pull that off a shelf. You can't buy that in a shop. These boys showed great character today. Listen, we'll enjoy this, but the big effort for us next week is Cavan (Saturday, 28 April in Kingscourt).

"To concede a goal in extra-time and a couple of points, any team would be dead and buried. It's very difficult to come back from that. But we kept plugging away. Monaghan are very hard to break down."
