Preview: three cracking Harty Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday

January 13, 2015

The Harty Cup. INPHO

These games have been postponed due to the bad weather.

Wednesday will see six schools battle it out to join Thurles CBS in the semi-finals of this year's Harty Cup competition.

Hamilton High School Bandon v Ard Scoil Ris
February 9th 2013 is a significant date in the history of the Dr. Harty Cup competition this decade. On that date, Our Ladys Templemore recorded a 1-13 to 0-14 victory over Ard Scoil Ris of Limerick in a Semi-Final Replay. The significance?  That game remains the only knockout Harty Cup fixture which Ard Scoil Ris have lost since 2010.

This amazing record of dominance has seen the Limerick school being crowned champions in 3 of the last 4 competitions played (2010/2011, 2011/2012 & 2013/2014). Despite losing to Thurles CBS in the group stages before Christmas in October, Ard Scoil Ris have refocused and are back again in a Quarter-Final looking for further success. Led by Ronan Lynch and a handful of other county minors from Limerick & Clare, this is a strong Ard Scoil Ris side which will take beating now that the action has heated up as we reach the knockout stages.

Hamilton High School Bandon on the other hand come in to this game as only one of two teams to win all their games thus far in the competition, coming through a tough Group 4 campaign with four wins from four. Their one point win over a Midleton CBS team fancied to win their group illustrated their pedigree, a game in which they not only came from behind to secure victory but also saw 9 different players contribute to their tally of 2-16 which demonstrates a balance to their team which will be an important attribute against the defending champions. The Bandon school are in good form up front, scoring 13 goals in four games en route to recording an average aggregate score of 22.75 points per game. Anything approaching that tally will see them progress to the semi-finals for the second consecutive year.

Rochestown V Nenagh CBS
St. Francis College Rochestown come in to the New Year as the only school to qualify for the knockout stages of both Munster GAA Post Primary Schools Senior A Hurling & Football competitions. A Corn Uí Mhuirí quarter-final date with Colaise na Sceilige awaits on January 21st but before all of that, it's an intriguing Harty Cup Q-Final with Nenagh CBS.

Rochestown have come through the group stages with four victories, a feat only achieved by Hamilton High School Bandon and they will approach this Quarter-Final with confidence. Following a narrow defeat in last year's semi-final, Rochestown will want to get back to the penultimate stages of the Harty Cup at a minimum and a victory over Nenagh CBS will ensure that objective is met.

Nenagh CBS on the other hand will come in to the game with a lot of confidence after winning three games in a row to qualify as Group 4 runners-up. A first round defeat to Hamilton High School Bandon after a high scoring game (4-10 to 2-13) did not augur well but four point wins over both Dungarvan CBS and HS Clonmel set up a winner takes all clash with Midleton CBS in the last round. And that winner was Nenagh, scoring 3 goals en route to a deserved 3-11 to 1-13 victory to end Midleton's interest in the competition.

Nenagh won the Croke Cup all of three years ago and can call on the experience of Darragh Peters from the 2012 panel to look to cause an upset in this game and secure a victory. An exciting game is in store if both teams hit form.

Castletroy CC v Pobalscoil Na Tríonóide
The clash of Castletroy CC and Pobalscoil Na Tríonóide is arguably the hardest of the Dr. Harty Cup Quarter-Finals to predict. Pobalscoil Na Tríonóide earned their place in the knockout stages with three narrow wins in Group 3. Two 2 point wins and one 1 point win in the final round against Charleville CBS showed their ability to knuckle down and secure victory in close games. The only blemish on their record was a 10 point defeat at the hands of group winners St. Francis College Rochestown.

Castletroy CC on the other hand managed to finish top of Group 2 which was the ultimate Group of Death. With four teams level on four points each heading in the final round, it was a case of winner takes all when Castletroy took on St. Colmans Fermoy. Despite being forced to defend for long periods, in particular in the second half, Castletroy secured a goal in both halves to ensure a hard-earned 2-9 to 0-13 victory. Earlier in the competition, Castletroy showed their mettle to record a 2-13 to 0-18 victory over Gaelcolaiste Mhuire AG. The only blemish on their record was a three point defeat to Limerick rivals SNTN Doon where they lost out in the final stages to a resurgent Doon side.

It's certainly all to play for with the winners setting up a date with Thurles CBS.
