The 2024 Electric Ireland Munster Minor Hurling Championship Final is scheduled to take place on Monday May 20th and the winners of this competition have received a cup first presented by Trans World Airlines (T.W.A.) Shannon Airport since 1946.
Following a proposal from Tipperary, the Munster Council have approved the commissioning of the new John Doyle Cup, which will be presented for the first time to the 2024 Munster Minor Hurling Champions.
John Doyle from Holycross-Ballycahill in County Tipperary was one of the legends of the game of hurling, winning 8 All-Ireland Senior Hurling titles and 10 Munster Senior Hurling Championship titles in an inter-county career spanning from 1949 to 1967.
The new cup was presented by the Doyle Family to the Munster Council on Tuesday last April 23rd at a ceremony held in the Horse and Jockey Hotel.
The large attendance on the night included GAA President Jarlath Burns, Munster Council Chairman Ger Ryan, Tipperary GAA Chairman Jimmy Minogue and numerous members of Munster Council, the Tipperary County Board and Holycross-Ballycahill GAA Club.
Speaking at the ceremony, Munster Council Chairman Ger Ryan said: “The name of John Doyle is synonymous in hurling folklore as one of the legends of the game. Winner of eight All-Ireland medals, it is only fitting that a cup for as prestigious a competition as the Munster Minor Hurling Championship will be named in his honour.”
Tipperary GAA Chairman Jimmy Minogue said “I am delighted to attend tonight at this historic occasion to commemorate the memory of Holycross-Ballycahill and Tipperary great and corner-back on the Team of the Century, John Doyle. While wishing all Munster counties well in the Minor Hurling Championship, it is my fervent wish that the John Doyle Cup will be presented to a Tipperary captain next month.”
Johnny Doyle, son of the late John Doyle said “On behalf of the Doyle family, we are delighted that the Munster Council have agreed to name the Minor Hurling trophy after John Doyle, with the cup being first presented to the 2024 Munster champions next month. This is a proud moment for our family and the parish of Holycross Ballycahill.”
