David Kelly believes Niall Carew's appointment as manager can give the Sligo footballers a "new lease of life".

Kelly, whose Tubbercurry side suffered a shock defeat to Aughawillan in the Connacht club SFC yesterday, is pleased that the vacancy was filled a lot quicker than last season when Pat Flanagan wasn't installed as Kevin Walsh's successor until the end of November.

"Pat didn't come in until late and we were always trying to catch up," the star forward told the Irish Mail on Sunday.

"It's great that Niall is in now so he has a couple of months to put a plan in place and see what has to be done. I definitely think the potential is there, we have the makings of a quality team.

"Like every other small county, we need everyone pulling in the same direction and need a bit of luck with injuries. But Niall coming in with new ideas that might give the whole thing a new lease of life."
