There is relief in Roscommon GAA circles after a controversial report on the future of the county boundary in Athlone recommended that a section of south Roscommon should not become part of Westmeath.

Communications Minister Denis Naughten is among those to welcome the report's recommendation that there should be no change to the Roscommon county boundary. The review of Athlone's Westmeath / Roscommon local government divide was ordered last year by former Environment Minister Alan Kelly and had the potential to affect the St. Brigid's and Clann na nGael GAA clubs, which are both situated within a few miles of Athlone.

Unsurprisingly, there was strong resistance to the idea of a boundary change among many on the west side of the Shannon, with 28,000 submissions being made to the boundary committee by members of the public.

Similar boundary reviews also took place in Waterford, Carlow and Drogheda.
