The late Michael Lambert

Michael Lambert, who was Ireland's oldest man when he passed away aged 107 on Sunday night, was a huge Roscommon GAA fan.

Born in 1907, he was what some of us might consider a middle-aged man when he attended the 1944 All-Ireland final - the last time Roscommon brought home the Sam Maguire Cup.

The Ballintubber native was one of 79,250 spectators on Jones Road that September 24th to witness the Rossies defeat Kerry by 1-9 to 2-4.

Roscommon, who had edged out Cavan after a replay the previous year, collected their second title with late points from their goalscorer Frankie Kinlough and Donal Keenan.

Michael, who had ten children and 22 grandchildren, became Ireland's oldest man last November following the death his fellow Roscommon man, Luke Dolan, who was aged 108.
