Launch of GAA Health and Wellbeing Initiative

Roscommon GAA will formally launch it's Health and Wellbeing Initiative this Wednesday September 3rd at 8:30pm in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon.

The initiative aims to assist Clubs in identify with and responding to the wellbeing needs of their members, both directly through GAA health-related programmes such as the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) programme, the GAA Social Initiative, the RESPECT Initiative, the 'Live to Play' road safety initiative, and the Play in my Boots mental health resource. It will also involve signposting to and partnering with, relevant national and local agencies who can provide services that may be of use to Club members, such as Samaritans, who are the GAA's new mental health partners.

Among the speakers on the night will be Emmet Major, Community Liason Officer with the Western Region Drug Task Force, Roscommon Senior Hurling Manager Justin Campbell, who is also the Connacht representative on the National Health and Wellbeing Committee, Teresa Bell of the Samaritans, Niall Dunne of Mental Health Ireland and Frankie Flynn of Pieta House. Club Officers, Coaches, Parents and anyone with an interest in promoting the aims of the GAA Health and Wellbeing initiative is invited to attend.

A SafeTalk training programme, which will enable participants to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources, will be the next event on the Health and Wellbeing Committee's agenda and sign-up forms will be available at Wednesday's launch. The Training event takes place on October 1st and places are limited to 30 people and will be offered on a first come first served basis.
