Connacht U21FC: Ros' bridge 11-year gap

Sligo's Conor Davey and Cathal Shine of Roscommon in action during the Cadbury Connacht U21FC final at Markievicz Park - INPHO
A late goal from substitute Alan O'Hara sealed Roscommon's first Cadbury Connacht U21 football title in 11 years at Sligo's expense in Markievicz Park this evening.

Roscommon 1-6
Sligo 0-4

The visitors had been clinging to a 0-5 to 0-4 lead when O'Hara grabbed the only goal with three minutes remaining after corner forward Darren McDermott's initial effort had been saved by Sligo goalkeeper Brian McGovern. And the Rossies confirmed their sixth provincial success in the grade in injury-time when Kevin Higgins added the insurance point.

Jimmy Gacquin's charges led by 0-5 to 0-3 at half-time, but failed to score again until O'Hara's crucial strike. Sligo, who were bidding for their first Connacht under 21 crown, had wind advantage in the second half, but only managed a single point from a David Maye free.

Roscommon's dominance of the play was reflected in the fact that they had registered 10 wides by the midway stage of the second half, but they still managed to keep their composure and closed out the game impressively to set up an All-Ireland semi-final meeting with the winners of tomorrow's Leinster final between Dublin and Westmeath in Parnell Park.
