Tributes have been paid to a Roscommon club footballer who tragically drowned after falling into the River Shannon over the festive period.

Thirty-four-year-old Trevor Brennan from Lecarrow died following the accident in Athlone at 11.25pm on Sunday. Trevor's body was recovered a short time later by divers and he was pronounced dead at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe at 3am.

The deceased was a talented player with St Dominic's GAA who paid the following tribute to him: "As 2018 draws to a close, we were very sad to learn of the tragic loss of club member and friend, Trevor Brennan.

"Trevor was a loyal player and supporter of St. Dominic’s for the duration of his short life. His sudden and untimely passing has brought great shock and sadness to the entire community.

 "As we wish all our players, supporters, members and management teams a very Happy New Year we ask everyone to spare a thought for Trevor’s family at this very difficult time and keep them in your prayers.’

Neighbouring club St Brigid’s said Trevor had been a “huge support” to them during the 2017 Sheep Shearing Festival held in Kiltoom.
