Illness rules Martin out for Offaly

Kevin Martin against Kilkenny
Kevin Martin is definitely out of Offaly's Leinster SHC semi-final against Wexford on June 8 due to illness. Former All-Star Martin has endured his fair share of setbacks over the years. He returned to the panel during the spring under new manager Mike McNamara, but was later hit with a triple illness which confined him to bed for a fortnight. "I was back in for about five weeks and then I got a bad dose of tonsilitis, glandular fever and a kidney infection," Martin said. "I'm definitely gone for the Wexford game. If they get over that and I feel okay and they want me back, I will." Martin attempted to make a comeback with his club, Tullamore, nine days ago in the Offaly Championship. "I was physically drained, no energy, just zonked," he added. "I'm hoping that in the next two or three weeks I will start to come back to myself. With glandular fever, the anti-bodies can stay in your system for a long time." Martin made just one National League appearance this year, coming on as a substitute against Wexford. He is one of the few survivors from the All-Ireland-winning teams of 1994 and '98 and, at the age of 30, he was hopeful of making a claim for a championship place until illness intervened.
