Whelahan in St. Brendan's Park plea

Departing Offaly hurling boss Brian Whelahan has expressed his wish to see inter-county games staged at St. Brendan's Park again.

Since O'Connor Park was redeveloped a few years ago, the Birr venue has been left out in the cold with all the major games going to Tullamore instead. This has greatly inconvenienced those in the hurling heartland of south Offaly, for whom Tullamore is 20-30 miles away.

"I would hope that the possibility of playing Walsh Cup games and suitable league games in St Brendan's Park in Birr will be looked into by the county board as they indicated earlier in the year, and not just brushed under the table," Whelahan said in the Tullamore Tribune.

After two largely disappointing years as manager, the Millennium Man felt the time had come for change.

"I felt that I needed to make this decision now so that the new man in charge can be appointed sooner rather than later and get to see as many clubs games as possible in the remainder of the championship," he explained.

"I want to thank the players, John Troy, Cillian Farrell and the rest my backroom team for all their efforts over the two years while I wish the new manager, whoever he may be, the best of luck and I hope he can take Offaly forward."
