The Agony And The Ecstasy

(Oldest Posts First)

Here are a some links to our games against Kerry in Croke Park over the past 40 years.(Believe it or not 40 years). Just copy the link and paste into your internet browser. We had the men, but lacked the experience
and a strong enough bench. Yet some outstanding performances by our players, not to be forgotten.

We always play well against Kerry, they play open football unlike the " dog fight" that Ulster football has become.

Enjoy!

The 1979 semi final was Kerry at their peak. Like Highcatch said they beat Dublin by double scores in the final. Clare beat Limerick by 6 points in Munster they then played Kerry in semi final and got beat by 36 points. The Miltown Malbay Massacre. Kerry then beat Cork by 10 in Munster Final. The following year they beat Cork by 10 again, but only won their semi final v Offaly by 5 and the Final v Roscommon by 3. We were lambs to the slaughter.

Sean mccague famously said he contacted Billy Morgan to try and find out any weaknesses in kerry side ahead of 79 game. Billy replied he needing bothered there were none. Some great games with Kerry watched the 85 drawn game recently before my time kerry were lucky to stay in the game the first half but dominated the second half and monaghan clung in to get a draw. The real regret was the last 10 minutes in 07 where the team produced probably best hours football ever produced by a monaghan side at croke but ran out of steam in the closing straight didn't have the bench and were ultimately v unlucky not to have beaten kerry that day. 08 was close also 18 was a freak goal by David Clifford to save kerry in clones.

I also wondered how monaghan fans took the defeat to Tyrone in 18

Although they went down fighting, surely it was absolutely gut wrenching to lose that game with nearly being in a final first time in the 1930s in the counties grasp

This would of been historical for such a small county to be in football's biggest show piece.

I would deem this result far worse then any kerry defeat as the final was so close.

It's unlikely a chance like that will arise again

what to you mean the final was close. the Dubs destroyed Tyrone in third gear. In reality we were lucky enough to get there, we played Laois, Waterford, Leitrim in the backdoor and then in the super's 8's played a poor Kildare side, drew with Kerry and beat Galway woo had already qualified.

I'm hoping he meant that the final was within touching distance. 2007 Kerry game was a quarter final and 2008 was a qualifier.

Agreed was a great chance to make the final and I was sick after that game but it didn't hurt as badly as kerry 07 mainly because I thought tyrone who were average enough by the high standards of tyrone in 00s were marginally the better side on the day we just didn't play well enough and as other posters have said dublin were on different planet to other teams. In 07 thought huge opportunity missed as we were the better side for an hour against the best side in country back then and just ran out of gas. Thought we played really well in 18 in super 8s but agree the path there was v straightforward after fermanagh defeat so players were well rested.
