Hughes left disappointed

Monaghan minor manager Arthur Hughes admits luck was not on their side in the All-Ireland MHC 'C' final defeat to Mayo last weekend.

Only four points separated the sides at the finish after Monaghan were forced to field without the suspended Aidan Kerr, while the lost Conor Boyle through injury in the opening minutes.

Hughes paid tribute to the players' efforts, but admitted to the Northern Standard that it just wasn't to be their day.

"We were in a position where we were without Aidan Kerr who was suspended and then we lost Conor Boyle after maybe a minute when he suffered a very bad finger injury that was, I can only describe as a mess," said Arthur.

He added: "Those lads are very dedicated and they have come on leaps and bounds but I think it's unfortunate that we were playing Mayo again this year because they won it last year and are still in the competition this year again instead of moving up to a higher level but having said that they were that bit stronger than us."
