A Co. Monaghan GAA club whose pitch was split down the middle by a sinkhole after part of a disused mine collapsed last September is to get new facilities.

Magheracloone Mitchells has been granted planning permission by Monaghan County Council for the development of two new training pitches, dressing rooms, car parking and other facilities. The sinkhole also caused damage to the clubhouse, which led to its indefinite closure due to safety concerns.

Gyproc, an Irish plaster and plasterboard manufacturer that has mining operations in the area, met with officials from Monaghan County Council following the incident and said it was in contact with families whose homes had been affected by the collapse.
