"There's lot of hanging-on done before the ball comes in"

Galway manager Kevin Walsh believes Damien Comer has "come in for a lot of serious attention."

The Connacht senior football champions are safely through to the last four of the All-Ireland but must avoid defeat against Monaghan in Salthill this weekend in order to top their group and dodge a semi-final meeting with holders Dublin.

And Walsh wants referees to afford his captain more protection against the Farney men: "Damien is a robust type of player, a strong player but a skilful player and certainly over the last few matches there were a few incidents in there. Because of the way he plays the game, the protection wouldn't be as high as he would like to allow him to express himself," he is quoted in The Irish Independent.

"He's got a bit more than strength and it would be lovely to see him be allowed express himself. We would feel that oftentimes there are frees against him that you would have to wonder where they came from. That seems to have gone up a level over the last few games.

"Over the last while you would have to say Damien Comer has come in for a lot of serious attention without getting much out of it. There's lot of hanging-on done before the ball comes in."
