Anyway Seamus of the Puffed Chest made his way into the Bowels of Tailteann. It was a big game for the Royals and an even bigger one for the Farney man. He was desperate to do well and felt that the Royal County could further his ambitions. No one really thought had he had a chance of landing the job in the 1st place as the Royals never ever had an outsider in control and everyone remembered when Luke from Somewhere to the South nearly had the job after Sean the Wizard had retired Fionnaengus and his cronies at the Knights of the Top Table had quashed it despite it almost being a certainity. While Fionnaegus had not got to be the first to taste the salmon of knowledge he still was a formidable client when it came to all things Royal.

Seamus had worked really hard in Farney to win something anything but had fallen at the last fence and glory had been denied to him. Seamus was mad for Glory. He felt that in the Royal County there were enough Warriors to finally get some silverware. Some said that the raw material was in Farney but that the Leader was the problem and he made some strange decisions at vital times and while he talked the talk he was a Good Leader but would never be a Great Leader. But Great Leaders where scarce and other than Sean the Wizard and Mick O'Expensesonly when involved down South and he also had a great run with the Short Grasses but had fallen short. Great Leaders needed a bit of Luck and it was felt Seamus of the Puffed Chest had used all his luck up when getting the Royal job in the 1st place.

He was fond of the limelight and always gave the Purveoyers of the Quill plenty of material the Royal Subjects did not like that approach. They were in the past more into doing their talking on the Tournament Field but this present batch of Warriors seemed somewhat gagged and the Royal Subjects did wonder why this was. The 2 wins they had to show for the year over the Men from the Shadow of Ben Bulben and The Oriels where not Earth shattering feats and the two defeats to the White Knights hurt big time.

The Royal Subjects made their way to Tailteann for this clash with the Tribesmen in big numbers. It was a beautiful eve of the Sabbath in the moon of Iúil and the Royal menfolk brought their women and their wanes to the Great Old Stadium. The Tribes people also travelled in good numbers too and while in Connaught their old emenies Maigh Eo had beaten them they had a good record against the Royals and with the new highway all the way to Kinnegad it was not a big journey on a good evening. The Royal stewards busy keeping lads of the Stadium who they thought had dodgy passes and letting in their buddies for free, were not ready for such a big crowd and they were ill prepared and the viewing area and the terraces filled up quickly while some of the chubby stewards where busy eating the tasty morsels available at the back of the Stand. .... to be continued......

The games got under way and the Royals did not seem to be suffering from Seamus of the Puffed Chest being missing for most of the week and with the Royal centre field players dominating and with Kevin of the Pierse O'Mahonys doing a good job on Padraig the Joyce the Royals looked good. Still Padraig managed a few scores and the Royal star Cian son of Wolfe Tone was not in the devastating form he displayed in Breffni. Another star of the previous year Graham From near the Sea was sitting on the bench which irked more than the East Meath contingent in the crowd. The Royals led 8 to 4 at the break but should have been out of sight as a lot of their missiles went wide of the mark. The Royal subjects acknowledged their team was playing well but the misses they feared might come back to haunt them and Meathmen no more than any did not like ghosts.

The Tribesmen came out all swords flashing in the 2nd half and set about reeling the Royals in and reel them in they did with Padraig the Joyce a constant threat. The Tribesmen had lost young Michael of Meehan as the Royal defenders played hard. They still got to within a score and at this stage Graham from near the Sea was in as Cian the son of Wolfe Tones was off. The The Royal subjects moaned as while they wanted Graham from near the Sea in they felt Cian was a match winner and would be needed. When Graham from near the Sea pointed the Royals 1st second half score with one half of a notch on the Sun Dial gone the moans which had been loud were drowned by the cheers.

One thing about Meath men at games they backed their team once they were in with a shout. The Tribesmen levelled and went ahead and the groans echoed far and wide. Farrel of Nobler pointed and the Tribesmen had a chance but with Kevin of Pierce O'Mahonys outstanding no score came and instead his club mate Stephan the Bray shot straight and true and the Royals led again. The Tribesman had a chance to equal but Brendan of Trim the Man in the Gap stood tall and strong and the Royals held out.

Seamus, Paul and Marty and oh yeah Tom where estatic and scenes which where remiss of the draw with the Red hands where seen and hugs and kisses where dished out. Seamus to be fair had made some good changes and showed bravery not seen before with some of the switches that were made. While there had been a second half collapse the Warriors had lifted their game in the last 5 and when all had looked lost they had shown good Meath like traits to respond and notch the last 2 scores to win.

Seamus was Wrecked some said it was because it meant so much to him- he was totally bushed but the Royal subjects did not give a hoot and said was win was a win. The Purveoyers of the Quill gathered round and Seamus as always gave them plenty of material.

He said it was great that the Royals had shown the old traits that he had installed in them, (some taught that these traits where there long before he came), also that the new training was paying off (most agreed it appeared to be). Also that in time this training would benefit the Royals big time, (that seemed fair comment) and that he was (A) A Great Leader, (B) the Knights at the Top Table knew their place (C) the Knights were a good bunch of lads and (D) if they stayed round long enough he would teach them plenty. The Royal subjects were glad to agree with B but had doubts about A,C & D……..To be continued……..

The Royal Subjects left Tailteann a relieved lot.

Once again the Warriors had a mini collapse in the 2nd half a full half of one notch of the Sun Dial had passed before a score arrived. Was all this winter training that Marty and Banty talked about having any effect at all. Ryans Bar on the main street was full of Meathmen and a few Westies staying the night in Navan.

Fiach McHugh O'Byrne wandered in for a dram.He had landed back in Navan early as Wickla had lost in Extra time in Ard Mhaca but it was an early game and Navan was on his way home. He listened to the Meathmen some seemed happy about the narrow win others moaned that they were lucky. This Meath shower where a funny lot, still in the Tournament and most not happy. He wished his Garden County was still involved. He heard complaints about these Ulster boys over the Royals and as he had not much time for blowins kinda agreed with some of what he heard.

The place was packed and stuffy (not much running water them times and no Air Con at all) and as the evening was moving on he decided to go out on the street and saddle up as there was plenty of fine filly's in Meath. Outside before he went for his long ride he spied Fionnaegus who was coming down the street with Fiach's old mate Finn McCool. He shot the breeze with them but as he was eager to lighten his load he did not want to dally to long. Fionnaengus was eager to chat and asked Fiach to come with them as they were heading out the Country for a good feed. (The Royal Warriors slopped out in Tailteann but the head hunchos liked to eat better). Fiach said to hell with it and he would stay with the two boys and look up a filly later.

They got into Fionnaegus's Coach and four and headed out of town. Fiach taught that he would be staying in Navan but Fionnaengus said he knew a good spot that would not be too busy.

They chatted idley about the game as they headed out the bumpy track and Fiach noticed that the passed through the Village of Nobbler and headed for the Ulster border….. To be Continued…..

Seamus of the Puffed Chest finally dragged himself away from the Purveyors of the Quill or rather he looked up in mid-sentence and noticed he was there on his own. Marty of the Red Hand and Paul of the Orchard waited around as they were eager for home it was a long trek back to Ulster and while the Travelling expenses where good it still was a long journey. Paul was eager to get back to Ard Mhaca as they had won today and he knew the crack would be good around Crossmaglen. Eventually they got Seamus loaded up as they normally travelled together but did not let on to the Knights of the Top Table as that would affect their spons at the end of the month.

They headed out the North road and when they got to the Garrison town of Dun Na Ri they let Seamus of the Puffed Chest out as he headed for Shercock and on to Corduff, The other two headed off towards Carrickmacross and on to deepest Ulster. But just at the Dun na Ri forest just outside the town Paul and Marty's had a break down as one of their horses when lame. Paul of the Orchard was mad and he cursed this trip to Meath and forecast that he would not be at this crack next year. He taught of the crack in Ard Mhaca and his made him madder. Paul was a big man and Marty did not like it when he was mad. Marty texted Seamus of the Puffed Chest and told him to get back and help them. Seamus was browned off as he was planning a few Jars in Shercock as he liked to call in and annoy the Breffni men when he won but he felt he needed to help his pals and as Seamus of the Puffed Chest was well known and dealt in Livestock in that part of South Ulster had a few contacts and picked up a fresh horse.

By the time Seamus of the Puffed Chest arrived at the edge of Dun na Ri Forest he found Marty hiding and that Paul of the Orchard had kicked the Coach (no not Marty but the stagecoach) and had demolished a wheel. The Fresh horse was no use with a broken wheel. Paul of the Orchard and Seamus of the Puffed Chest had a few angry words and Marty came out of hiding now that he had support. Marty was a quiet fellow and eventually got the lads calmed down and Paul said he was starving. Seamus of the Puffed Chest said he would bring the two boys for a feed and while Paul of the Orchard was angry that he was missing the crack at home he mellowed and agreed.

Cabra Castle was a fine place and only down the road and the 3 amigo's headed off on foot as while it had been a little drizzly it was now lashing down and they had no coats and where soaked. A coach and Four (with a Meath Reg) passed as they headed up the long avenue to the Castle and the Ulster boys cursed it as it never stopped. When they eventually got to the Castle door they were dripping wet. They knocked and were reluctantly the staff let them in. They asked for a Table for three and had a few Jars at the bar which was quiet. They were led to a table and what a shock they got as Fionnaegus, Finn McCool and Fiach McHugh O'Byrne all nice and dry where going through the Menu in anticipation of digging into a fine feed.

Fionnaengus invited the bedraggled trio to join them and Seamus of the Puffed Chest who was wondering how he would get out of having to pay for his two mates seen a chance of a free feed and did not have to be asked twice. They pulled up a table and got 3 chairs and joined the party. Wine and Mead was order and some Adams Ale as Fionnaengus was a pioneer and Seamus was delighted to see it was Corduff water……. The six lads sat around the table it was a little uneasy. Seamus of the Puffed Chest was watching Fiach McHugh O'Byrne he knew he seen him somewhere before. Paul of the Orchard was a bit contrary but was now a bit drier and was settling down for a good feed so was getting a bit more comfortable with the surroundings. Finn McCool was like his name cool enough and not fazed by much. He had tasted the salmon of knowledge and knew everything that was worth knowing about most things. Fionnaengus was wise enough and was very shrewd and had nothing to fear from these boys and knew the Ulster trio would have manners around him and technically he was their boss. Marty of the Red Hand was eager for home and was worrying about getting the wheel fixed and while Seamus of the Puffed Chest said he knew a Wheel wright he wondered would he get it fixed on the eve of the Sabbath.

Seamus of the Puffed Chest was a good man to talk and usually liked to be the centre of attention and was confident in a crowd. He tried to get the crack going but not much was stirring. Fiach sat back and took all in. He put chat on Seamus and asked him about livestock in general and how the trade was looking. Fiach owned a god few acres in Wickla and has a good herd of animals and plenty of deer. Although some said they were the Queens deer. Fiach asked if Seamus had a market for deer but Seamus was not committing to anything. Fiach asked also about Cock Fighting. He though Seamus of the Puffed Chest being a border man might have an interest and Fiach was interested in how he got his nickname which everyone knew was most fowl. Seamus did not want to talk about his nickname and tried to change the subject as he remembered now that he had seen Fiach in Droihead Nua when the Royals played the Lillies and Fiach seemed friendly with Kieran of Geezer. Seamus knew also that Finn McCool was a member of the Na Fianna club and Kieran of Geezer played a bit of club football with them when he moved from Ard Mhaca. Seamus of the Puffed Chest was getting fed up with all the questions and was glad when the maid arrived to take the order.

Fiach of course ordered venison as did Finn McCool, Paul of the Orchard wanted Pork with Apple sauce, Fionnaengus of course ordered Salmon as he still hoped that there might be a second Salmon of knowledge and someday his luck might come in. Seamus was a red meat man and ordered the biggest steak he could while Marty was a vegetarian and just got vegetables and spuds. Plenty of wine and mead was on the go and as Paul of the Orchard was a big man he wanted a big glass. The staff found a special glass which held 4 quarts and the 1st Pint was born.

Seamus of the Puffed Chest wanted to change the subject and get away from the inquisitive Fiach and talked about the game. Fiach and Paul of the Orchard spoke about the Ard Mhaca/Wickla match as Fiach had gone to it and Paul was getting really happy now with the story of how his County had won and of course the Pints where flowing quick and fast. Fionnaengus asked for quiet he was a pioneer and remembered the draw for the Qualifiers was on RTE and asked that a Telly be brought in. 16 Counties in a Hat and the winners to make the Quarter Finals. The Royals had been in the Quarter Finals the year before (The Liilys bet them) and the year previous made the Semis under Eamon the Unlucky. Having been bet by the Lillys twice already that year no Royal subject wanted to see them Lilly's again…….. To be Continued……….

Sorry about that lads but got way laid there for a while.

The Telly was turned on and all went quiet the 8 counties in the pot where the Royals, The Glensmen, The Men of the Mournes, The Lillies, The Orchard men, The Men of the Treaty City (although the treaty was not yet signed), The Red Hands and The Deisce.

Paul was hoping that the Royals would draw his own County of the Orchard as he really missed not seeing them play. Marty feared the Red Hands while The Royals drew with them in Navan in the Spring Tournament he felt Micky of the White Heart would have learned more. Fionnaengus wanted a home draw while Seamus of the Puffed was praying for Waterford as with all managers he wanted a handy a draw as possible. Finn McCool and Fiach smiled. Finn who had tasted the Salmon of knowledge knew what was in store and he knew that with the GAA chiefs worrying about the poor attendances and small crowds that they had a trick or two up their sleeves and remember sleeves where big and loose in those olden days.

The 1st out of the pot by the decidedly dodgy looking men who were pulling out the balls was the all Ulster clash of neighbouring counties The Mournes and the Glensmen, Finns smile broadened, decent crowd there…..The next from the pot was another all Ulster clash of the Red Hands and Armagh, Finn began to grin another fuel saver as fuel was getting expensive while Paul of the Orchard slammed his fist on the table and Marty kinda backed away in fear of what the big man full now of pints might do next. Paul knew once again he would miss his home county's game and this was peeing him off more and more. Seamus had the rosary beads worn down praying for one of the supposedly weaker Munster Counties while Fionnaegus just wanted a home draw at this stage.

Finn was enjoying this as having tasted the Salmon of Knowledge knew most things although you did not have to be a genius to suss out the GAA plan here.

The next ball out was An Mhí…………. Fionnaengus breathed a sigh of relief and straight away once he had his home draw turned his attention as too who was left. Seamus of the Puffed Chest was clearly panting Deisce…. Deisce ……..please God…… please God…. but is was not to be as out of the pot came Cill Dara, The Knights of the Short Grass, The Lillies…. nightmare of nightmares and Kieran of Geezer to boot. The mood was sombre round the Table nobody noticed the last two out Waterford v Limerick an all Munster clash and another decent crowd for the GAA.

Finn was nearly laughing at this stage. Fair play to the GAA sure you could always count on them….. To be continued…

The six heads sat around the table no one was too happy. Fionnaengus maybe a bit with a home draw but the Lillies again "surely we bate them sometime but when"? Paul of the Orchard was in Fowl humour no hope of seeing Ard Mhaca in the next game instead he be stuck inTailteann and that cool …… Geezer standing around with his hand under his chin. God did he hate that stance. He swore that never again would be in this situation and he could not wait to get out of this mess that he somehow had found himself in.

Finn McCool and Fiach where in ok form bellies full they were sitting back taking stock of these boyos in front of them. Marty was quiet stunned that it was the Lillies again and worrying how the Hell he was going to get home as no one had arrived to fix the Wheel. What was he going to do? Seamus of the Puffed Chest was well deflated Kildare again God he hated them with their Whiter than White armour and the whole sheen of them altogether. Kieran the Geezer with whom he had the famous Belly rub in Droihead Nua. How the Hell would he get the better of them. They would travel in number to Tailteann and make the Shabby Place bright with their Daz Whiteness for a few hours and then disappear again. He was deflated but he Puffed out his Chest and when Fionnaengus produced a pack of cards they decided to play a few hands.

1st Black Knave (Jack) to deal was the cry as Fionnaengus dealt them out and needless to say Seamus of the Puffed Chest was the dealer. The row started as Fionnaengus wanted Poker, Paul of the Orchard wanted Poker and Banty wanted Pontoon, Marty just wanted home. Seamus of the Puffed Chest was the dealer so it was his call as the Big man got redder in the face and spilled more crumbs and drink down his front than the lazy stewards in Tailteann did at half time in a National League game.

Anyway the game was on and Seamus of the Puffed Chest not surprisingly wanted to keep the Joker in the Pack. Once again there was Out Cry but as usual Banty got his way (he was the dealer) Fiach and Finn smiled away as it was plain to see this Ulster man really ran the show no matter was the game was and the Royals did as they were told.

Of course another debate on the rules and once again Seamus as Dealer called the shots and as usual made a number of strange calls no more than the Queen (Jamie) could play anyway with the King (Coamhin) usually out of position too.
Seamus of the Puffed Chest soon was racking in the money winning hand after hand and soon Marty and Paul of the Orchard where out of Chips (Paul was a hard man on Chips anyway) and out of the game. Paul full to the gills fell asleep and Marty got a Taxi home. Fionnaengus got a Pontoon and took the Dealing Duties as Seamus was not to happy. Straight away Barney changed the game to Poker and this slowed down the flow of money but they cut the Pack but Seamus demanded the Joker be left in.
Fiach sensed trouble and evil in the air and lo and behold a card fell to the floor and all the players jumped to see what card it was. The candle fell and the light went out but not before Fiach noticed that one of the players had a cloven foot. He was shocked and taken aback but in the Darkness could not make out who it was. The table was upscuttled and Chips and cards went everywhere, the game was abandoned and a light was sought and when finally the Candle was lit and the Bar man said it was past closing and time for home. Everyone trudged out and Fiach still shocked was glad to get out of there. He noticed a crack on the stone floor and a scorch mark near it. He Fionnaengus and Finn got into the carriage and headed for home nobody had noticed how Seamus of the Puffed Chest left... To be continued.......

Anyway the following Tues all where back in Tailteann to plan how in the name of God or Satan would the Royals beat these Lilly's. Most Royal folk where sick to the teeth of them having not got the better of them since Eamon the Unlucky was Lucky enough to bate them back in the League of 2010 in Tailteann by a narrow margin. Seamus of the Puffed Chest would be happy to get the better of them any way at all.

The Warriors fair play to them where up for it and practiced hard on the field of play while Marty of the Red Hand kept things going it was noticeable Paul of the Orchard did not seem as enthusiastic as before. (It was well known that he wanted out and his home county where making moves to pry him away from the Royals and everyone knew that it would not take a crow bar to do that)

The Purveyors of the Quill appeared in Tailteann and as usual Seamus spoke at length about his plans and his way and how he would sort it and all would be well. Tom said damn all and neither did Marty, Paul just had a forlorn look in his eye and everyone left him alone.

Soon the Day arrived and The Lilly's came in droves eager for victory they were enjoying their dominance over their Green neighbours and wanted it to go on. Secretly they feared the Royals and the reputation they had garnered when Sean the Wizard had led them but the Lilly's had no Celtic Crosses in years and were a little jealous of the Royals Seven Stars that they wore on their armour. The leader Prince Kieran had indeed a Celtic Cross or maybe two of them.
The Lillies arrived early and took up good vantage points in the viewing area while the Royal Stewards with their Funny coloured Tunics where busy greedily feasting behind the Stand. When they arrive out their eyes squinting because of the Bright daylight and the Daz Whiteness of the Lilly Hordes they tried to move them but to no avail so Fiach, Fionnnegus, Sean the Wizard and a fella called Luke once again perched in bad seats with poor view for the anticipated full blooded contest.....

Up on 20000 people filled the great old stadium and the Lillies got a wonder start when Kevin of Pierse O'Mahonys was deemed to have fouled the burly Lilly full forward Tomas Son of one of the Uibh Faille Connors and the Field judge gave a penalty. Little John of Allenwood on whose slight shoulders carried a lot of the Lilly hopes stood up to the pressure and the Lillies in the crowd roared as the net bulged as the net danced. This was going to be easy but the Royals rallied and Big Joe was playing well and soon the Royals were level. The game toed and froed and as the Lilly's had the breeze they went in only 2 up at the break. Everyone realised at this stage easy it would not be.

The 2nd half started and Kildare scored but Cian son of Wolfe tone pointed twice, Kildare edged 2 ahead again. Cian again and another few scores and with 15 to go its level. The Royals where happy the breeze at their backs and surely they would slay the White dragon this time but chances where missed and though while on top Meath could not get ahead. 10 minutes passed and still it was level with 5 to go who would crack 1st. Seamus of the Puffed Chest sent in Jamie of Enfield but the supporters where aghast and again he played the Queeny in the wrong position as a defender. Paddy of the Hill of Tara also came in but possession was lost and the Lillies edged ahead.

Disaster for the Royals as Bolton gets a goal and soon they are 5 ahead. Again the Royals bemoan missed chances and mistakes as the Lillies are now 5 clear. Two late scores and a goal in it but the whistle goes and the Royal lose again 4 or is it 5 times in a row bet by the Lillies tough to take. Seamus made the wrong subs Cian missed the chances but another said he scored 8 points of the 14 the Royals got bet 2-11 to 0-14. Goals win games. But the penalty was a gift bad refereeing... Bad this... Bad that..... All over for 2011.... Meath gone.... Finished nothing for 2nd place.....

Seamus of the Puffed Chest was gutted again Prince Kieran proved best. Seamus spoke to all I did this.... I did that... The Royal hordes did not want excuses but the Royal Warriors did pit up a good show and maybe things would be better. At the corners questions where asked was this right was that wrong. Fionnaengus and the boys wondered was this an improvement but most reckons Eamon the Unlucky had done just as well or maybe better.....to be continued....
