B FL Div 2 Final: Kelly inspires 'Seasiders'

October 09, 2017

Ciaran Kelly St Colmcilles

St Colmcilles 1-10 Ratoath 0-9

Played in Ashbourne this was an eagerly anticipated League Final between the Seasiders and a Ratoath side that went into the game as big favourites given there untroubled path to the final, having remained unbeaten throughout the League campaign. However the Cilles did not read the script and it was they that went home with the silverware after a thoroughly deserved victory.

The Cilles with a great mixture of experienced players and youth went into an early two point lead through a free from Ciaran Kelly and a point from play from James McElearney, after some great early raids from defence from the evergreen Brian Mullan. The Cilles also had a number of early wides, but a further point from play from Kelly and a free from Eanna Walsh left the sides locked at 4pts each approaching the half time break, but then the Cilles struck with an excellant goal after a fast paced move and some fine passing led to an excellant finish which was cooly dispatched by Kelly.  The half time score was 1-4 to 0-4 to the Seasiders. A Ratoath backlash was expected early in the 2nd period however it was the Cilles whom had the better start after a point from play from McElearney,  another free from Kelly after the same player had been unceremoniously hauled down when a goal was on. The Cilles got further points from play from McElearney and Sean Collier and a late point from a Kelly free.

The Cilles defended superbly throughout the match and continued to repel the lads from Ratoath and they held out for a much deserved win. 2018 will now see the Cilles ply their trade in Division one of both the 'A' and 'B' leagues. The Cilles had excellent performers throughout the field, however special mention to Brian Mullan, Eoin Sweeney, Luke Bree, James McElearney and Ciaran Kelly.
