JFC B: Trim trim Dunboyne in Drumree

August 14, 2017

Trim's Brian Dowling

Trim 4-23 Dunboyne 2-10

Trim and St Peter's Dunboyne met in the final round of the Meath Junior B Football championship at Drumree on Sunday last. It was a 'do of die' effort for the Trim lads. A victory by at least fifteen points was needed and even at that they were depending on Kells to beat Na Fianna which was played at the same time. The Trim lads did their bit and had an emphatic victory over their opponents by 19 points while Na Fianna were beaten. In essence this means that Trim progress to the semi final of the Junior B football championship.  The victory was all the more worthy  given that some of the junior B players were held back due to the possibility that they might be picked to play for the Intermediate team on Tuesday night. Risk of injury was a major concern if they had played against Dunboyne.

Dunboyne started the smarter of the two teams and led Trim by 1-2 to 0-3 after seven minutes and signs were that it might be a battle all the way. The points came from Peter Farrrell, Brian Dowling and a free from Eoin O'Connor. But the Reds announced their intentions shortly after with a plethora of scores, 2-5 to be exact, to reach the mid half nine points in front at 2-8 to 1-2. The goals came from Eoin O'Connor and Dimi Higgins and the points from Higgins (2), Brian Dowling (2) and Alan Shine. Both sides pointed in the seventeenth minute with stylish wing back David Murtagh scoring Trim's. The play calmed somewhat in the final ten minutes with the only scores coming from the Dunboyne team when they hit two points on the cusp of half time to reduce the deficit to seven points leaving the half time score at Trim 2-9, Dunboyne 1-5.

Trim went on another scoring spree directly from the throw in. 1-5 was registered in nine minutes to leave them fifteen points in front. The scoring honours went to Brian Dowling (2 points), Eoin O'Connor (2 points), Alan Shine (1 point) and the goal from Paul Munnelly. Dunboyne came back with two points in the tenth minute to be followed by a David Murtagh one for Trim. Then in the twelfth minute Dunboyne fired in a goal to reduce the deficit to eleven points but a quick response came with two points from the boot of Dimi Higgins. Dunboyne pointed again before Trim had another stellar patch. From the fifteenth to the twenty fifth minute they fired in 1-5 and then then a final point with two minutes left to a mere one point from for their opponents to win by nineteen points and into a semi final.  Trim's final quarter scores came from Brian Dowling (1-1), Ciaran Giblin (2),  Paul Munnelly (2) and Ciaran Joyce (1).

This was a great team effort. As well as the scorers all of the defenders were outstanding including goalkeeper Conal McGrenra.  They were resolute in abating most of the Dunboyne attacks. The team knew what was required before a ball was kicked and they carried out their mission with great aplomb.
