U16 FL Div 5 Final: Killary claim title

May 29, 2017

Killary's Shane Carpenter heads for the Ballivor goal during the Meath Under 16 Division 5 final at Dunganny.

KILLARY EMMETS 5-13 BALLIVOR 2-5

THE scoreline is hardly a true reflection as Killary Emmets were made fight all the way before lifting the U-16 FL Division 5 cup at Dunganny on Sunday.

Ballivor proved formidable opponents for much of the game and were only two points in arrears following an excellent start to the second half.

However two goals and a point between the 35th and 38 minutes left Killary in the ascendancy and the Ballivor challenge faded after that. The south Meath outfit failed to score in the last 28 minutes while Killary hit 2-9 in the same period.

It took both sides quite a while to settle and there were more wides than scores in the opening stages. Ballivor led for the only time in the game following a point on 18 minutes.

The breakthrough for Killary came on 20 minutes when Jamie Hickey was fouled and referee Seamus O'Connor pointed to the penalty spot. The spot-kick was dispatched to the net by Evan Carry who had earlier opened his sides account from a free.

That penalty goal was the start of a purple patch for Killary and Conor Meade added a point, their first score from play on 21 minutes. Killian Price raced through for a goal and he then added a point for good measure to leave it 3-2 to 0-2.

Ballivor hit back with a goal of their own on 26 minutes but at the break it was Killary who led 3-4 to 1-4 after Carry found the net and Shane Carpenter pointed on the approach to half-time.

Within 90 seconds of the restart Ballivor had a goal and a point to whittle the lead back to two points. However a point effort from Rian Monaghan ended up in the back of the Ballivor and the substitute then added a point to extend the lead back to six points.

That lead stretched further following a goal from Jodi Donoghue on 38 minutes and entering the final quarter Killary led 5-6 to 2-5.

Killary pressed home their superiority from there to the finish with Conor Weldon, Jack Farrelly and Philip McGovern all getting on the scoreline.

After the match Fe 18 vice chairman John Gilmartin presented the cup to joint captains Killian Price and Cathal Duff.
