FL Div 3: Trim tops in top of the table clash

May 02, 2017

Trim's Robbie Kenny

Trim 1-17 Carnaross 2-7

Trim travelled to Carnaross on Saturday evening last to engage the home side in what was a top of the table clash in round seven of the football A league division 3. The Trim side had an unbeaten record in the competition this far and the home side with only one defeat thus setting up an interesting encounter. The visitors in general were in control throughout the first half of the game winning the majority of the midfield exchanges from the kickouts and attacking at speed but could have been further ahead except for a number of scoreable chance squandered in front of goal. By the twenty eight minute they were seven points ahead on a score line of 0-8 to 0-1 but the homeside fired over two points on the cusp of half time to leave a more respectable look on the scoreboard for them entering the break.

The men in Red went eight points up immediately from the throw in but the sting was taken out of that with a Carnaross goal one minute later. Points were traded in the fourth minute but the Trim lads hit three on the trot to reach the tenth minute six points ahead and went one further up in the seventeenth. But the home side scotched any idea Trim had of an easy run in when they hit and unanswered 1-3 in a five minute period around the  twentieth to reduce the deficit to a mere one point. The Trim lads were reeling but eventually pulled themselves off the ropes, regained composure and hit 1-3 in the final five minutes to limp home by seven points on a final scoreline of Trim 1-17, Carnaross 2-7.

The Trim half back line of Ciaran O'Rourke, Darryl Phelin and Robbie Kenny were outstanding, contributing 1-8 of their sides score. O'Rourke could be classed as his side's saviour. Time and time again he broke up Carnaross advances, won numerous breaking balls in the middle of the field and put the game beyond doubt when he nailed a goal and point in the final minutes. Alan Douglas once again pulled the strings in the middle of the field and was ably assisted by the hard working Robbie Bourke. Up front Ciaran Joyce put in a fine performance with a high work rate while clocking up two points. Nigel Duignan, although picked at full forward was rarely at home as he played a roving role, sweeping up breaking ball and joined in many of the Trim's attacks.

This latest victory leave Trim on top of the league table equal on points with Clann Na Gael but ahead due to a superior score difference. Both sides lock horns two round further on.
