Mixed Sunday for Kilmessan camogie

March 28, 2017

Kilmessan's Megan Thynne

Both played in lovely sunshine, Kilmessan camogs had a mixed day last Sunday in their opening rounds of the league where the Division 2 side were well beaten at home by Dunderry but the Division 1 team who are defending champions had a resounding win over last years beaten finalists Dunboyne in Dunboyne.

Div 2 Meath Camogie league played in Kilmessan

Kilmessan 2-7  Dunderry 3-13

Kilmessan were always up against it. Dunderry have aspirations of an intermediate title this year, Kilmessan who will play in the Junior championship however at times made life extremely difficult for the visitors and but for a couple of outstanding saves from Dunderry keeper Collette Rowan, the score could have been a lot closer.

Kilmessan had a few noteworthy performances all over the field with Katie Walsh relishing her new defensive role at wing back and the Brady sisters of Aine in attack but in particular Ciara in defence (who was making her adult debut) along with Lauren Gorman at full forward were a few who caught the eye.

Tara Murphy contributed with some well taken frees and Niamh Costello worked hard at midfield but had the unenviable task of marking county star Aoife Minogue. Kilmessan will build from this and if they can compete well in the Div 2 league, it will serve as excellent preparation for the championship

Kilmessan: N. Carroll, J. Smyth, C. Brady, K. Walsh, N. costello, K. Clynch, E. Fitzgerald, E. Horan, T. Murphy,  L. Gorman, A. Brady, E. Harlin

Div. 1 Meath Camogie League played in Dunboyne

Kilmessan 9-14   Dunboyne 1-3

It was all one way traffic in Dunboyne on Sunday where Dunboyne had no answer to Kilmessan's dominance all over the field in particular the pace of the full forward line of debutant Leah Dennehy, Katie Ni Choileain and Kelly Gorman and when Gorman and  Ni Choileain were  substituted in the 2nd half due to injury, the introduction of Megan Thynne and Nadine Doyle only caused further problems for the Dunboyne defence.

Kilmessan team and scorers: AM Dennehy,  M. Horan, A. Donnelly, L. O'Neill, T. King, A. Lynch, M. O'Leary, C. O'Leary 0-1, A. Walshe, S. Horan 2-5 A. Mc Loughlin, L. Dennehy 0-1, K. Ni Choileain 2-2, K. Gorman 1-2. Subs: N. Doyle 0-1 for Gorman,  M. Thynne 4-2 for Ni Choileain, N. Costello for Mc Loughlin
