A Dunshaughlin motion proposing that the number of teams in the SFC be reduced to 16 was well aired before a decision was taken to put the matter on hold with an appointed subcommittee to consider the feasibility of the proposal in the coming months.

The discussion was at Monday's first county committee meeting of the year.

Paddy Ward suggested that that senior teams are playing too many championship games with the SFC looking more like a league. "A more competitive structure is needed," he added, pointing to Meath champions' poor record in Leinster.

Also due for examination in the months ahead is a motion from Drumconrath, proposing a seeding system based on the previous year's results.

In an earlier version of this article we stated that the proposal was to reduce the SFC to 12. Dunshaughlin's proposal was to reduce the number of teams to 16.
