Senior Camogie: 8 in a row for Kilmessan

Kilmessan were crowned Meath senior camogie championship winners for the 8th year running with a six point win over Na Fianna, who were appearing in their 1st senior decider, in wet and windy conditions at Lomans Park Trim.

The holders got a great start and raced in to a three point lead after ten minutes. The outstanding Francis Lynch opened the scoring, Megan Thynne followed up shortly before Lynch landed her second point.

Katie Mulvihill settled Na Fianna with a pointed free and the girls in the Black and Amber had the lead narrowed to a point, 0-4 to 0-3, after twenty minutes with fine efforts from Shauna Ennis and Aine Kirby. 

Just when Na Fianna had got themselves back in to the game Kilmessan got in for a fortunate goal when Katie Ni Coilean's shot deceived keeper Leah McNally and ended up in the net. McNally made amends minutes later when producing an brilliant save but Kilmessan managed the tag on points through Aileen Donnelly and Ni Coileann to go in at the break in control 1-6 to 0-3.

The opening 15 minutes of the second half was an even affair with Na Fianna full forward Katie Mulvihill sending over four points from frees, Donnelly and Lynch (2) replied for Kilmessan and when Moira Kirby got in for a great score the lead was down to four 1-9 to 0-8. But once again the holders replied with a goal this time from Megan Ni Coileann after a great run through the heart of the Na Fianna defence and title number 8 in a row was heading back to Kilmessan.

After the game Kilmessan captain Michelle Horan was presented with the Senior Camogie Champiopnship Cup while Francis Lynch picked up the Player of the match award. Lynch and Donnelly have now won 14 senior camogie championship medals.
