FL Div 4: St Mary's have to settle for a draw

February 08, 2016

Robbie Callaghan gets in his pass for St Marys against Kilbride.

St Mary's 1-7 Kilbride 2-4

St Mary's new management team of Finton O'Brien, David Gogarty & Fergus Barnett had to settle for a draw on their management debut in the AFL Div 4 Round1 tie.

Because of the clash of colours St Mary's worn Trinity College Dublin jerseys.

It was never going to be a night for a high scoring game as the wind, cold and underfoot conditions would no doubt play a major role on proceedings.

St Mary's played against the wind in the first half and both teams set the pace for a lively opening 15 mins as they both pressed hard straight from the off.  St Mary's trailed the visitors at half time by 3 points with a score line of 0-4 to 1-4 with Kilbride getting the only goal of the opening half.

The 2nd half saw 3 changes from the bench for St Mary's and these changes with the help of the wind gave St Mary's the boost they needed to get back into this game.  Kilbride snatched another goal midway through the 2nd half which would be their only scoring contribution to the half. St Mary's then hit back with a goal of their own from the impressive Pete Watters, this goal was followed by further scores from Pete and his scoring partner on the night Robbie Callaghan. Some fine individual displays on the night most notably Pete Watters, Robbie Callaghan, Brian Smith & Michael Everard and plenty of positives for our new management team to work on for the next round.

The final score line was 1-7 to 2-4 which gets each team off the mark in the league.

Next match is away to Slane on Saturday afternoon 13th Feb at 4pm…

St Marys: Derek O'Brien,  Conor Lenehan, Bernard Mckeown, Paul Scanlon, Karl Dempsey, Brian Smith, Michael Everard, Gary Teelan, Erin Madden, Richard Moore, Robert Victory, James Lynch, Robert Callaghan ( 0-3 (1f)), Niall Curran, Peter Watters ( 1-4 (3f)) : Subs used Luke Sullivan for Robert victory ,Andrew Everard for Gary Teelan, Christopher O Brien for Richard Moore.

Kilbride Report

Kilbride earn there first point of 2016.

St Marys 1-7  Kilbride 2-4

With the conditions only fit for paragliding both teams got on with what was an eventful game. The visitors dominated the first half and should have been out of sight at half time having missed three first half goals. Rustiness was showing in front of goal as the Kilbride defence were well on top. Points from Ross Tormey 2 Jeff Sheridan  1-2 in the opening half put the visitors in control but would the missed chances come backvto haunt the visitors?. Kilbride led by three at the break. 1- 4 to St Marys 4 points.

Into the second half and St Marys playing with the strong gael were quickest out of the blocks and registered two quick points before and excellent taken goal from Conor Storey put the visitors back in control. Further chaces came but like the first the men from Kilbride failed to convert. Sloppy defending gifted St Marys a goal to give them hope. As full time approached both teams gave it there all but a draw away from home was not a bad result in the end.
