JFC C: Ultan's progress as Syddan bow out

August 17, 2015

Emmet Costello St Ultans

St Ultans 1.11
Syddan 2.07

St Ultans progressed to a semi final spot in the Junior C with a deserved, hard fought win over Syddan.

This was championship tempo from the start with both sides giving all in a tough and enertaining game played in good spirit by both sides.

Ultan's made the worst possible start conceding an early goal. They stuck to their game plan and clawed their way back into game with points from the impressive Emmet Costello, Andrew Barry and a goal from veteran Rob Duffy on the stroke of half time.  This was a strong team effort by all Ultans players in first half with each working very hard for each other. Half time score - St Ultans 1.05, Syddan 2.02.

The winners upped the tempo in second half when Conor Smyth added points, Andrew Barry and Emmet Costello going into a 4 point lead, heading into last quarter. Their cause was not helped with Shane Mulroe who was having a fine game receiving a black card.

Syddan finished with three late points and Ultans held on for a deserved victory.

They were best served by Greg McKeever, Shane Dolan, Emmet Costello and Rob Duffy.

ST ULTAN'S 1-11  SYDDAN 2-7

SO near and yet so far for Syddan as they bowed out of the Junior C championship at the quarter final stage at Kilmainham last Sunday.

Twice in added time Syddan went desperately close to snatching a match-winning goal but keeper Alan Rogers denied Robbie Farrelly while moments later the woodwork cames to St Ultan's rescue following a shot from Conor Dillon.

Syddan made the near perfect start with Gary McManus getting the vital touch to a Cathal Dardis delivery for a goal on three minutes.

They also finished the half with a goal, Michael Fedigan producing a terrific finish from a Peter Sheehy centre.

That score on 27 minutes left Syddan leading 2-2 to 0-5 but Robert Duffy struck for a St Ultan's goal in first half added time to leave it level at the break.

Syddan squandered chances in that opening half and opportunities also went a begging at the start of the second half. St Ultan's though were more economical and had opened up a 1-9 to 2-3 lead by the 41st minute.

With Emmet Costello in fine form the Bohermeen outfit eventually went four points clear in the final quarter.

The introduction of Conor Dillon boosted Syddan and they hit three unanswered points in the final five minutes but time eventually ran out on them.
