U16 Div 2 FL final: Trim on top in absorbing contest

July 01, 2015

Trim's Mark Murray with Paddy Matthews and James McMahon Drumconrath Meath Hill during the Under 16 Division 2 FL final at Pairc Tailteann.

A couple of late points from Trim finally saw off the challenge of Drumconrath Meath Hill in this very exciting Meath Under 16 Division 2 Football League final at Pairc Tailteann. It capped a fine week at underage level for the Town club. Under 12 A and Under 14 A hurling titles were already in the bag before yesterday's final.

Trim 3-10 Drumconrath Meath Hill 2-11

The winners got the perfect start when lively corner forward Aaron Lynch got in for a goal. Cathal McEvoy pointed for Drumconrath Meath Hill before Man of the Match Brian Dowling kicked his first point. The amalgamation were enjoying  a fair share of possession and added scores through Jack McMahon and Shaun Murphy. Dowling kicked a fine long range point before Drumconrath Meath Hill enjoyed their best spell of the game.

A first goal for Aaron Lynch

Between the 10th and 20th minute they added 1-5 without reply to open up a 1-8 to 1-2 gap. McEvoy got in for the goal on the 20th minute. Trim moved Dowling from full forward to the number 11 position and it paid dividends. Lynch got his second goal and Dowling raced through the middle for Trims 3rd major to stun Drumconrath Meath Hill. The teams went in level at the break Trim 3-3 Drumconrath Meath Hill 1-9.

Plenty of excitment in the crowd

McMahon put Drumconrath Meath Hill back in fromt with the first score of the second half. But once again it was Dowling who took the fight to the North Meath side. The number 14 sent over 3 unanswered points, the third, score of the game, making a great catch on his own half back line and soloing through the Drumconrath Meath Hill defence before sending over the bar. A fine goal by Paddy Matthews and a McMahon point put Drumconrath Meath Hill back in front 2-11 to 3-7 with six minutes remaining. A draw looked on the cards but Trim found the energy to push on and a brace of points from Aaron Lynch put them one up. Mark Murray added the insurance point just before the final whistle to round off a perfect week for the Trim club.
