AFL3: Syddan goals edge out Kilmainham

May 14, 2015

Killary Emmets Daire Rowe

SYDDAN 3-7
KILMAINHAM 2-9

Syddan held out to claim two precious league points despite Kilmainham's late revival at Ludlow Park.

The hosts led 3-7 to 1-7 following Paddy Farrelly's point in the 52nd minute but failed to score again as Kilmainham rallied in the closing stages. Richie Brady and Mark Newman pointed before Conor Kilgallen found the net to leave the minimum between the sides with three minutes remaining.

The Kells parish side then spurned a couple of opportunities to claim at least a share of the spoils while the woodwork also saved Syddan on another occasion.

It was 0-2 each after 14 minutes before Daire Rowe converted a free to put the home side ahead. Rowe then crashed the ball to the net from an acute angle after cutting in along the endline.

Further points from Gary Farrelly and Rowe (both frees) left it 1-5 to 0-2 by the 26th minute.

Kilmainham though were thrown a lifeline when Freddie Newman found the net in first half added time.

Points from Freddie Newman and Mark Newman (two) left Kilmainham ahead by the 41st minute but those scores were cancelled out by a Daire Rowe penalty goal to regain the lead for Syddan.

That lead increased to five when Ian Curran found the net entering the final quarter before Kilgallen had his sides opening point from play on 49 minutes.

The difference eventually extended to six but again the lead proved something of a burden for the Syddan men in the closing stages.
