MFL Div 2: St Michaels lose by a point for 3rd week running

March 18, 2015

St Michael's Ben Tobin gets away from Niall Murphy St Vincents Curraha during the MFL Div 2 game.

For the third match running St. Michaels minors have lost by a single point in this years division 2 league. Luck eluded them again in Kilberry on St. Patricks Day morning in a very close and competitive contest in which the teams were on level terms on 4 occasions. Ben Tobin put in a man of the match performance for the losers covering every blade of grass on the Kilberry pitch as well as firing over 6 points.

St. Vincents / Curraha got off to an early 2 point lead but St. Michaels were on level terms after 10 minutes following points from Ben Tobin and Matthew Halpin. However St. Vincents / Curraha dictated the scoring for the remainder of the half sending over 5 points to just a single point from Tobin which left St. Vincents / Curraha with a 0-7 to 0-3 interval lead.

The intensity increased from the re-start with both sides exchanging points in the opening 10 minutes and a converted Matthew Halpin free on 45 minutes left just 3 points between the sides at 0-10 to 0-7. Two minutes later Ray Reilly was unceremoniously hauled to the ground as he was about to shoot at goal. The resultant penalty was well saved by Luke McCarthy but his deflected save found the penalty taker Shane McDonnell who made no mistake at the second time of asking and levelled the match for the second time.

St. Vincents / Curraha hit the front again two minutes later only for Tobin to level matters again on 52 minutes, both sides were reduced to 14 men when Matthew Halpin and Brian Joyce received their marching orders with 10 minutes remaining and shortly afterwards St. Vincents / Curraha edged in front again but Tobin was on hand to split the posts from a free on 59 minutes to level the match for the fourth time, but by a cruel twist of fate the same player was adjudged to have handled the ball on the ground while helping to break down an attack on his own half back line and the winning point for St. Vincents / Curraha came from the resultant free in the first minute of injury time.
