Ladies Simonstown U16's begin their championship campaign with a win

February 24, 2015

Simonstown 7-11
Dunboyne 4-9

The Simonstown U16 girls began the defence of their championship title with a victory over visitors Dunboyne (who had conceded home advantage) in what was a keenly contested and highly entertaining match.

Playing with the aid of the breeze it was Dunboyne who held the upper hand in the first period leading by five points as half time approached but a late Niamh Donnelly goal saw Simonstown trail by two heading in to the break on a score line of 3-7 to 4-2.

On the restart Simonstown took the lead with three quick fire Donnelly points. Although Simonstown were to stay in front to the end a gallant Dunboyne outfit ensured the girls had to work hard all the way.

Youngsters Michelle Smyth and Aoife Farrell had outstanding games in defence ably assisted in the rear guard by Laura Barrett, Leanne Harris and Lauren Kearney. In midfield the work rate of Niamh Cassidy and Lauryn Grier was exemplary. Up front Donnelly, Tara Berigan and the lion hearted Mollie Byrne were to the fore. A couple of late scores from Grier and Sinead Rennicks put a gloss on the final score in a match closer than the result may suggest.

Best wishes to Emma Cassidy who picked up an injury while on duty with the county U16's in Newry recently.
