U16HC: three in a row for Na Fianna

Na Fianna and Trim served up a thrilling U16A hurling final at Rathmoylan on Monday night in front of a large crowd.

In a tight low scoring first half where both defences were on top Na Fianna lead 1-6 to 0-4 at the interval with 1-3 from corner forward Ethan Devine, two points from Ronan Byrne and one from Shane Walsh. Ronan Byrne added 4 pts early in the second half to push Na Fianna 9 pts ahead with 20 minutes left to play. A hand injury forced influential centre back Sean Martin to retire with half forward Sean Coffey moving back to fill the vacant no.6 position Na Fianna stamped their authority on this final with a further goal and 2 points from Ethan Devine to lead by 2.12 to 0.5 with 8 minutes left to play. However Trim played their hearts out to the end which included 7 minutes injury time to add 2-2 to their tally while inspirational captain and top scorer Devine added another point from play to leave the final score Na Fianna 2-13 Trim 2.7.

Best for Na Fianna were Ciaran Holton; Will Flynn and Sean Martin until injured, midfielder Ronan Byrne who ran himself into the ground and Ethan Devine on a night when south Meaths side desire and will to win all over the field were evident in this victory over their arch rivals,Trim ,thus capturing the U16A championship to add to U16 B hurling titles won in 2012 & 2013.

After the game Hurling Board Chairman Dom Reilly thanked both teams for a great match, complemented Rathmoylan on the beautiful playing surface that contributed greatly to this final and finally presented the Cup to winning Na Fianna captain Ethan Devine
