A League Div 1 Duleek Bellewstown topple O Mahonys

Duleek Bellewstown 0-13:
O Mahony's 1-8

Duleek Bellewstown continued their recent good league form of late and with their third league win on the trot when defeating visitors Navan OMahony's in this closely fought encounter in Duleek on a sunny Thursday evening and in doing so secured their Division 1 status for another year. O'Mahony's came to Duleek hoping to repeat their recent Feis Cup success, and with the home team's Division 1 status under a slight threat they faced a much more determined side on the night and the home secured both league points with a well deserved and merited 2 point victory.

Playing into the village goals Duleek Bellewstown opened the scoring in the 5minutes with a point from John Flood but the visitors found their range and had 3 points on the board by the 11th minute. John Flood got the home team back on track and pointed to reduce the deficit and to following Con McGinley pointed frees in the 16th and 17th minute brought the home side to the front. O Mahony'ss then produced a mini scoring burst which saw them score 3 points between the 24th and 27th minutes and when McGinley pointed on the 29th from a free there was just a single point between the sides at the interval

Duleek Bellewstown 0-5 OMahony's 0-6

Duleek Bellewstown started the second half with an Anthony Burke point after three minutes to bring the sides level. Then John flood kicked three points in a row between the sixth and ninth minutes. The first when he received a cross field pass from Casey Dunne, the second from a well worked move after the ball was turned over by the defence who found Mark Collins who placed Flood and he then pointed his third in as many minutes direct from the kick out. Padraig Howard and Anthony Burke then kicked a point each two points to increase the lead to 5 by the 15th minute. The Howard point came from a knockdown pass from Casey Dunne and he drove straight through the middle to point from 30 yards. The Burke point came when a high ball into the home goal area was knocked clear by goalkeeper Anthony Dowling to Kevin McCann and from his clearance Mark Collins found Anthony Burke on the left-wing and he dodged past some defensive tackles to slot over

in the 22nd minute Robin Clarke somehow managed field the ball between two O Mahony's attackers with the home defense stretched and the ball was worked up to Mark Collins who pointed from 30 yards to extend the lead to 6

With OMahony's not having scored for the opening 25 minutes of the half it looked as if the home team were going to run out comfortable winners but the visitors other. Ideas. They opened their second half scoring with two quick points in this 24thh and 25th minutes. But Con McGinley steadied the ship with another pointed free on 26 minutes after a foul on Burke. A goal from a penalty in the 29th minute completed the scoring and despite O Mahony;s best efforts they could not secure another major and the home squad were justifiably pleased when the referee called time .

Duleek Bellewstown's third quarter scoring burst in opening up a 5 pint lead proved decisive but O'Mahony's will be disappointed with their final passes as they put the home side under pressure in the last quarter. This was a fine team performance right throughout with a full hour's effort put in by everybody. Dowling's kick outs continue to drive the team forward while the defensive unit will be happy in restricting their opponents to just 9 scores. Up front John Flood is continuing his 4 point average and McGinley keeps the frees popping over with all the other forwards contributing individually and collectively.
