Skryne lose to Wolfe Tones

July 21, 2014

Skryne's Mark Battersby
Skryne 0 - 12
Wolfe Tones 2 - 10

Wolfe Tones struggled to get to grips with Skryne's work rate for the first 20 minutes of this A league game in Kilberry and they trailed by 6 points after 20 minutes on a score line of 0 08 to 0 02, the Tones points coming from Fiachra Ward. Skryne were winning all the breaks around mid-field at this stage and the Tones defence was under constant pressure as a result. Stephen Corrigan and Alan Callaghan began to exert a bigger influence around mid-field and Tones gradually won more possession in this vital area thanks to the efforts of Shane Glynn, Mark Coleman, Paul Byrne and Eanna Harrington.

It is said that goals win games and Tones needed a boost heading in to half time. The goal arrived courtesy of Fiachra Ward who was played in by Niall O Reilly after a surging run through the heart of the Skryne defence. Tones although completely outplayed up to this point were now back in the game. Two Cian Ward frees narrowed the gap to the minimum on a score line of 0 08 to 1 04 with half time approaching. Skryne added a further point to stretch the lead to 2 points but Niall Mc Loughlin replied for the Tones with 2 points to leave the teams level at the break Wolfe Tones 1 06 Skryne 0 09.

Skryne added a point on the resumption but Tones were level after a Fiachra Ward point in the 40th minute. Tones dominated the next period with Stephen Sheppard prominent and Cian Ward scored the next 3 points (2 frees) to open up a gap in the Tones favour but Skryne had reduced that gap to the minimum with 8 minutes left to play, Tones 1 10 Skryne 0 12. The decisive score of the game came in the 55th minute from the boot of Cian Ward who weaved through the Skryne defence to drive the ball low to the Skryne net. Tones now held a 4 point lead which they held to the end to win 2 10 to 0 12.

Skryne report:

While Skryne put in a much improved performance to the one displayed earlier in the week, they non-the-less went down to a strong Wolfe Tones side in Kilberry on Saturday evening. Indeed this game was in the melting pot right up until the end when Cian Ward scored the home side's second goal. Many from both sides thought that the Oristown man over-carried the ball however referee Pat Clark was happy enough to let the goal stand.
Skryne got off to a good start in the game with points from Ian Davis, Alan Carty and Brian Davis in the first four minutes. The home side pulled two back on the eighth and ninth minute but then five points on the trot from Thomas McKeown, John Morley (2) Alan Carty and Ian Davis (45) pushed Skryne into a six point lead. However, Wolfe Tones eventually got their A game going and scored 1 -2 between the twenty first and twenty fifth minute. Mark Battersby put over another for Skryne but Wolfe Tones drew level before half time with two more points.
Battersby posted another on the resumption but four points from Wolfe Tones on thirty five, forty one, forty five and forty eight minutes saw them go into a three point lead. Skryne upped their game considerably and were rewarded with two points from Aidan Tuite and Ian Davis. Then o a ball which should have been cleared was picked up by Cian Ward and while he was well Shepparded by the Skryne backs, managed to retain possession and get his shot in for that controversial goal.

The game ended on a scoreline of Skryne 0- 12, Wolfe Tones 2 - 10
