Cooney Cup Round 3 News Round up

Whitecross NS ( Julianstown) V St Marys PPS( Bryanstown)

Billed as one of the games of Round 3, both sides have real ambitions in this years Cooney Cup with both top of the Group B Table. The game itself was a great match with St Marys PPS winning out in the end in a very close contest by 5 points. Both teams had some great players on show but it was the firepower of David Bell and the play making and scoring of Tomas O Connell that ultimately was the difference. Whitecross for their part will feel that whilst they lost, they put it up to St Marys PPS for long periods. For them Brandon Bermingham was outstanding around midfield whilst the Stephen Breen's introduction at half time was telling after a long spell out with injury. These sides could well meet later in the knockout stages and whilst Brian Kellys charges certainly had all the answers and were impressive in Round 3, Whitecross have enough to suggest that they will improve for the meeting, should they lock horns in the knockout stages.

Scoil Sporaid Naomh ( Bettystown) V St Marys NS (Donore)

In the other Group B game in Round 3, St Mary's NS school in Donore got their first points on the board in this years Cooney Cup with a 12 point win over Scoil Sporaid Naomh from Bettystown. It was nip and tuck in the first half with only 6 points between the teams at half time. For the Bettystown School Tegan Gordon grabbed a brace of points to match St Marys Donore's opening scores but it was a half in which Sam Victory's play making ability and range of kick passing that was a joy to watch for Donore NS. He was at the heart of everything good in this display and in the 2nd half Donore NS got on top as the Scoil Sporaid Naomh's game challenged. This was an entertaining game played in Piltown and in Round 4 St Marys have a Bye, whilst Scoil Sporaid Naomh play St Marys PPS Bryanstown.

Le Cheile NS (Mornington) V St Pats/Clonalvy (Ardcath)

In Group A the opening game of Round 3 saw a cracking match played in Piltown. Le Cheile NS have been very unlucky to date in that they have lost out narrowly to both the Group leaders in this group whilst playing superbly in both. For the Ardcath/Clonalvy combination they had lost to St Pat's NS Stamullen and drew with Bellewstown NS in their opening Rounds. This game was end to end from start to finish in a pulsating contest and a point from the boot of Harry Svjedar with 1 minute to go seemed to have won it for Le Cheile, only for a rash challenge on Ardcath's corner forward resulted in a late free at an acute angle to level up the game. Acute or not the free taker for Ardcath/Clonalvy was as cool as you like and levelled up the game and share the spoils. A game which was a great advertisement for the Cooney Cup.

Gaelscoil an Bhradain Feasa ( Mornington) V St Pats NS ( Stamullen)

The 2nd game in Group A in Round 3 saw the much fancied St Pats Stamullen take on the Irish speaking boys from Mornington. St Pats came into this game on the back of two impressive wins, whilst the Gaelscoil had yet to get of the mark. If St Pats NS thought this was going to be an easy 2 points the opening 20 minutes came with a shock as the Gaelscoil played inspired football with Fiachra Mac an Aba kicking 5 wonderfully points including an incredibly sideline score to send them 5 points clear. Slowly but surely St Pats hauled themelves back into the game and inspired by Ciaran Brennan actually led 11 to 5 points at half time. In the 2nd half the they continued and stretched there lead to 12. Two more points from Fiachra Mac an Aba and one from Jamie Duffy reduce the deficit to 9 points at full time in what was a physical but highly entertaining affair. Best for St Pats was Ciaran Brennan who kicked and set up some great scores, whilst Fiachra Mac was the star for the Gaelscoil kicking 7 wonderful points of his sides 8 point total.

Bellewstown NS V Realt Na Mara Boys NS (Donacarney)

The final game of Round 3 in the Cooney Cup saw Realt Na Mara unbeaten in 2 matches, put in another ruthless and impressive performance against previously unbeaten Belewstown NS. In the end the Donacarney Boys won out 31-9 in a game Rory O'Hanlon, Endy Ehicoya, Godfrey Ehicoya and Jack Murphy were all to the fore. This is a juggernaut of a team in full flight and the prospect of them playing the other only unbeaten side St Pats NS Stamullen in Round 4 is a mouth watering one. Bellewstown NS for their part have Le Cheile in Round 4 and their chances of qualifying are far from over despite this defeat.
