Leinster MHL: Westmeath overcome Meath

Westmeath recorded a four point win over neighbours Meath in the third round of the Leinster Minor Hurling League. The game was played in ideal conditions at Lomans Park Trim.

Meath played with the wind in the first half and held a one point advantage at the break. The home team led 0-5 to 0-0 after 15 minutes thanks to fine scores from Josh Wall (3), Liam Carey and Conor Kearney. With ten minutes left Meath held a 0-9 to 0-2 lead but the visitors dominated the remainder of the half. Full foward Ciaran Doyle narrowed the gap at the break with a goal and three points. Half time Meath 0-9 Westmeath 1-5.

Meath introduced senior goalkeeper Charlie Bird for the second half but it was Westmeath's Ciaran Doyle who stole the show. The Raharney player scored 0-6 in the second period. The visitors led 1-13 to 0-9 after 15 minutes, their goal coming from Shane Clavin. Points from Wall and Bird kept Meath in the game and when Bird found the back of the Westmeath net from a free only two points separated the teams, 2-11 to 1-12. Points from James Gonnery and Doyle closed out the game in Westmeath's favour.

Westmeath lost full back and captain Darren Giles with ten minutes remaining when he received a second yellow card from referee Tom Anderson.
