April 29, 2024

Clann na nGaels Ben Corkery

Clann Na nGael 3-12 Dunderry 1-13

On a fine Saturday evening in Rathcairn in a local derby between close neighbours, a feast of football was served up in the Stiofan O Mealoid Cup which was also a vital league game.

A large attendance saw 2 teams going hammer and tongs and tough exchanges where ref Paul Mooney dished out 2 yellow cards each in the 1st half alone. Clann Na nGael opened the scoring with Diarmuid O Donnchadha and Dunderry responded. A great move initiated by Philly Garry from wing back ended with Philly scoring the opening goal, a further 2 pts from Ben Corkery and Daragh Swaine followed by a Tomas Doyle goal ensured that Clann Na nGael led by 2-4 to 0-5 at the break.

Both teams would not be happy with missed opportunities more so Clann Na nGael in the 1st half. Dun Doire were fired up for the 2nd half in this enthralling encounter. It was backs to the wall and a outstanding defence ensured a nail biting finish. Dun Doire to their credit continued firing over the points and when Clann Na nGael conceded a goal, victory was within their grasp.

The half back line of Diarmuid O Donnchadha, Jack Doherty,  Philly Garry were outstanding in this period. Injuries to full back Darren Kelly and stand in captain and corner back Micheal O Cofaigh certainly did not help the nerves of either players or spectators, but credit must be given to subs Odhran Daly, Cian Swaine, Liam McNamara and Coilin Griffin.

Points in the 2nd half by Dara Swaine 3, Ben Corkery 2, Tomas Doyle 2, Philly Garry 1 and then the icing on the cake a brillant break away goal finished with style by the lighting fast Ben Corkery ensured a victory for Clann.

Best for Clann Na nGael, the afore mentioned half  back line. Gerry Sullivan at midfield aided by young Eoin Kelliher, up front Ben Corkery was outstanding, Tomas Doyle and Dara Swaine equally impressed but the work rate of Paul Tuite all over the field must be commended.

Clann na nGael: Eoin O Griofa, Carl Kelly, Darren Kelly, Michael O Cofaigh, Diarmuid O Donnchadha, Jack Doherty, Philly Garry, Eoin Kelliher, Gerry O Sullivan, Aaron Ennis, Tomas Doyle, Liam Kelliher, Ben Corkery, Dara Swaine, Paul Tuite, SUBS. Odhran Daly for Aaron Ennis, Cian Swaine for Darren Kelly, Liam McnaMara for Liam Kelliher, Coilin O Griofa for Michael O Cofaigh.
