FL Div 2: Michaels secure second win in Carlanstown

St. Michaels Gearóid O'Malley

St. Michaels 3-18, Trim 1-09

St. Michaels secured their second win in Division 2 against a depleted Trim side on a perfect evening for football in Carlanstown on Saturday evening last.

Trim started brightly with a point in the 1st minute but the St. Michaels inside forward line quickly found their range with points from Gearóid O'Malley (1f) and Shane McDonnell. Cian McFadden then hit 5 (2f) on the trot in a six minute spell as Trim struggled to get a foothold. A missed penalty added to their misery as Declan Reilly, O'Malley (2f) and McFadden added points. Trim weren't about to lie down and kept in touch with 5 points to stem the tide but St. Michaels pushed forward again and Shane McDonnell was denied twice from close range but made no mistake from the penalty spot just before the break after Declan Reilly was fouled inside the square.

Half time St. Michaels 1-11, Trim 0-06.

Trim opened the scoring in the second half with a point but a mix up in their defence allowed the quick thinking McDonnell the opportunity to chip the retreating defender for his 2nd goal. Brian O'Reilly broke the line again to set up Paddy Tobin for the home side's 3rd goal and further points from McDonnell, Harry Dunne and Reilly left Trim with a mountain to climb. They did add 2 more before O'Malley (f), McDonnell and McFadden (2), who was a constant threat completed the scoring. Trim added a goal on the 60th minute but St. Michaels can build on a good night with a great display from half back line of Matthew Halpin, Dan Murphy and Jack Griffin providing a platform for the forwards to kick on.
