Midfield pick: Meath's Best Team from our last four All-Ireland wins

April 01, 2020

Clockwise Gerry McEntee, Liam Hayes, Nigel Crawford, Jimmy McGuinness and John McDermott

Unprecedented quiet times on the GAA front and with no return on the horizon because of Covid-19 we have come up with a novel way to keeping your Royal GAA mind occupied.

Since 1987 we have won four All-Ireland finals. You the reader can have a say in picking our Best XV from that glorious era.

We are half way there now in this selection. Like most positions it's hard to choose two from these five very talented footballers.

Meath have a very proud tradition of producing some of the best midfielders the game has ever seen. The period from 1986 to 2001 was no different.

Liam Hayes and Gerry McEntee formed a perfect partnership for the All Ireland wins of 1987 and '88. Solid, tough, great distribution and mighty fielding, the Skryne and Nobber pair could not be matched by anything the Rebels threw at them.

Fast forward to 1996 and another Skryne man, John McDermott, took over as the best midfielder in the country. The Ireland International Rules captain was partnered by Dunsany's Jimmy McGuinness in the 1996 replay win over Mayo and Dunboyne's Nigel Crawford in 1999 as Cork were put to the sword once more.
