Meath is to adopt a ‘wait and see’ policy in relation to the Tier 2 football proposal following a discussion at last night’s county committee meeting.

Central Council will put forward a proposed format for a vote at the Special Congress, which takes place at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on October 19th.

Under the proposal provincial championships will be played as currently. The All-Ireland qualifiers will be open to teams from Division 1 and 2 and any Division 3 or Division 4 teams who qualify for their provincial final.

This will mean only two full rounds of All-Ireland qualifiers in future as opposed to four.

It is proposed to then introduce a new straight knockout Tier 2 championship for all Division 3 and 4 teams that do not reach their provincial finals.

Clann na nGael delegate Cathal Joyce said that he saw merit in the new format and the weaker counties deserve their day in Croke Park. However he wouldn’t like to see Meath delegates hands tied and they should be allowed to make up their minds on the day after listening to the discussion.

Francis Flynn (Seneschalstown) agreed with the Clann na nGael delegate and said he wouldn’t vote against it if the majority of Division 3 and 4 counties were in favour of it.

Earlier Slane’s John Greene said Meath should vote against the proposal on this occasion as it didn’t make sense in view of a report from a high powered committee regarding the streamlining of fixtures due a month later.
