FL Div 2: A home win at windy Rathkenny

February 11, 2019

Rathkenny's Barney Lenehan

Rathkenny 0-09 Meath Hill 0-07

The wind was a big factor on Sunday morning when Meath Hill visited for the third round of the AFL.

Rathkenny started with the wind in favour and took full advantage of this. Two Barney Lenehan frees and a point a piece from Ivan Lenehan, Stephen Crosbie, Thomas McGuiness, Keith Timmons and Jack Gore had Rathkenny leading 0-07 to 0-01 at the break.

The second half was a different affair for the home side. Playing against a strong wind, Rathkenny opted to play a more possession based game and points from Barney Lenehan and Keith Timmons were enough to comfortably see out a win.

Rathkenny: Colin Curtis, Niall Brannigan, Ross Gore, Mark Byrne, James O'Hare, Thomas McGuiness (0-1), Stephen Crosbie (0-1), Brian Meade, Robbie Garry, Jack Gore (0-1, Barney Lenehan (0-3f), Keith Timmons (0-2), Andrew Bellew, Ivan Lenehan (0-1), Jack Thompson.

Subs: Donal Curtis, Adam Brennan, Daithi Downey, Johnny Farren

Rathkenny 0-9 Meath Hill 0-7

Meath Hill lost out by two points to senior side Rathkenny on Sunday morning in round 3 of the Division 2A League.

Playing into a strong wind in the first half, an under strength, but very competitive Meath Hill were 0-7 to 0-1 down at half time. Mark Tully got their only score..

With the wind at their backs, Meath Hill began to reduce the deficit slowly, including two frees from Dominic Yorke and two more points from Tully. However, time ran out and Rathkenny managed to keep Meath Hill at arms length.

No shame in defeat and a welcome two week break until the next round to get some injured bodies back.

Meath Hill: Dominic Yorke (0-2), Darren Byrne, Graham Boylan, Ryan Carry, Sean Rooney, Barry Kieran, Chris Yorke, Paddy Matthews, Kieran Slavin, James Mooney (0-1), Ryan Shekelton, Emmet Matthews, Jack McMahon (0-1), Ian Malone, Mark Tully (0-3). Subs: Conor Marry, Dean Martin, Luke Doran
