B FL Div 4: 4-star Russell leads Wood to victory

May 25, 2018

Kilmainhamwood's Damien Russell

Kilmainhamwood 4-11 Ballivor 1-7

Kilmainhamwood recorded an excellent win in the division 4 B league on Thursday evening.

The first half was a hard fought defensive affair with some excellent blocks and tackling by David Carolan, Niall McCabe and Peter Flood keeping the score down, while points from Cathal Bennett, Andy Farrelly, Paul Carolan and Gary Yorke kept the Wood in touch as the teams went into half time level at four points apiece.

Cathal Bennett went off at half time after a hamstring strain and so in a scene reminiscent of any good Hollywood movie, Benny Reilly was called from the sidelines. With his shorts tucked over his tracksuit bottoms, Benny lined out for the second half with his two sons Bernard and Declan.

Wherein the first half it was the Kilmainhamwood backs who were doing the heavy lifting, the second half saw the forwards pick up the slack. Damian Russell rifled a goal in after two minutes and Gary Yorke slotted a free to go four up. But within a flash Ballivor scored 1-1 to level things up. Andy Farrelly then set up Damian Russell with a great chance which Russell failed to convert. However Russell would make up for it and then some as he channeled his inner Gareth Bale to score three more goals which were all a carbon copy of each other. After winning the ball, Russell would dummy his man and then blast the ball low in the corner of the net with precision finnishes.

Paul Carolan scored four of the finest second half points you will see, jinking past his man and fisting or kicking it over. Luke Owens also scored a beauty of his left boot and worked very hard in the second half.

Best for the Wood were David Carolan, Paul Carolan and Damian Russell.

Kilmainhamwood: Padraig Carolan, Niall McCabe, Bernard Reilly, David Carolan, Peter Flood, Emmet Roache, Gary Yorke (0-3), Declan Reilly, Paul Carolan (0-5), Andy Farrelly (0-1), Darragh McCreevy, Luke Owens (0-1), Cathel Bennett (0-1), Damian Russell (4-0)

Ballivor Report

Ballivor 1-07, Kilmainhamwood 4-11

Ballivor hosted Kilmainhamwood on Monday evening after managing to get a squad together after being forced to play despite both Killyon and Kildalkey being in hurling action at the same time, which consists of well over half of Ballivor's b league squad.

Ballivor still came out in good spirits and knocked over the first two points of the game early on - from first team goalkeeper Conor Smith and Paddy Molloy. The visitors levelled the game up with two quickfire points.

It was point for point for the remainder of the half with Ballivor left ruing two missed goal chances and multiple wides.

HT: Ballivor 0-4, Kilmainhamwood 0-4

The 'Wood' started the 2nd half well, burying their first goal in the top right hand corner from 20 yards and following up with a point to make it a 4 point game. Ballivor bounced back straight away with a well taken goal by Chris Dunne and a point from Cian McCarthy, both introduced at Half time. Ballivor took the lead through a point from Richie Sherrock after good build up.

This was as good as it got for Ballivor as the game completely swung in the visitors favour with 15 minutes to go. Ballivor struggled to win anything around the middle, which led to attack after attack from Kilmainhamwood.

It was a complete capitulation from the hosts in the closing quarter with the Wood scoring 3-5 to 0-1 point in this period, coming out comprehensive victors in the end.

In what was an even game until then, it was a disappointing end, and the lads will be looking to put this right in their next outing. Best for Ballivor were Dylan Heavey in defence and Paul Farrell in the middle of the field.
