B FL Div 4: McGrath shines as 'Hill' make it four from four

May 23, 2018

Meath Hill's Pierce McGrath

Meath Hill 3-18 Simonstown 3-13

Meath Hill made it four wins from four in Div 4 of the B League with a high scoring win over Simonstown on Tuesday night in Meath Hill.

This result didn't look likely as Simonstown raced into a 0-9 to 0-2 lead after twenty minutes.  However, Meath Hill clicked into gear themselves and goals from Derek McMahon, Pierce McGrath and Donnchadh Boyle meant they somehow lead 3-7 to 0-10 at half time.

Scores came freely for both sides in the second half and even with the concession of three goals and a missed penalty, Meath Hill still ran out five point winners.

In a great advertisement for B League football, Meath Hill had good performances all over the field, none more so than Pierce McGrath, who scored 1-9, Derek McMahon and Thomas Carolan.

Simonstown Report

Simonstown Gaels 3-13 Meath Hill 3-17

Simonstown had a superb start and after 20 minutes found themselves with a seven point advantage. However, 3 goals before half time by Meath Hill and a number points meant there was a 13 point turnaround. This final 10 minutes of the first half won the game for Meath Hill. Meath Hill are 5 from 5 in the B League Division 4 and Simonstown fought well throughout.

Simonstown began the game very well and Brian Brady and Ciaran Reilly impressed throughout in the full forward line. Brady accumulated 4 points in the first half and Ciaran Reilly opened up the scoring with a fine individual effort after 3 minutes. The Gaels played their most free flowing football to date and were in control of the game after 20 minutes. Simonstown committed a lot of lads forward and left themselves exposed at the back. Meath Hill scored 3 very good goals before the halfway mark. Score at the end of a pulsating first half Simonstown 0-10 Meath Hill 3-7.

Meath Hill missed a penalty in the second half but unfortunately the deficit was too much for the Navan Men. Late consolation goals by Aaron O'Connell and Shane McEnery lessened the winning margin.

Next up for Simonstown in the B League Division 4 is Moynalty at 8pm on Tuesday 29th May.

Thanks Meath Hill for the sandwiches and tea, great hospitality.
