FL Div 3: Second win for Clann Na nGael

Clann na nGael got their second A  league win of the year with this 2 point win in Athboy on Sunday evening.

The hosts enjoyed a great start when centre back Carl Kelly blasted to the net  in the first minute. St Ultans responded with 3 points to level up the score as both sides fought hard to gain the upper hand. Cian Swaine and Eamonn O Donnchadha added points before the break as the Athboy/Rathcairn lads took a 1-6 to 0-8 lead to the dressing room.

The second half saw Clann na nGael up their game with hard running from Philip Garry and Conor Fenton  causing problems for the St Ultans defence. Full forward Kevin Tiernan was showing well for the ball as the Athboy/Rathcairn lads looked to extend their lead. Garry got 3 points and Fenton added 2 points as Clann na nGael stretched  their lead to 4. 

Eamonn O Donnchadha who scored 6 points and Cian Swaine who scored 3 points showed well for Clann na nGael also in the second half. With time almost up Clann na nGael lead by 5 points but St Ultans continued to battle and were rewarded with a goal. This left 2 points between the sides. As the game entered injury time St Ultans went looking for the goal they needed but a resolute Clann na nGael defence stood firm to record their second League win of the year.

St Ultans Report

St Ultans 1-13 Clann Na Gael 1-15 

Clann Na Gael came away with both points in the A League after a strong second half performance. Clann Na Gael opened the scoring with a goal but this cancelled out with 3 points from St Ultans from Tadhg Ratty on his first team debut, Cian Rennicks and Gearoid Rennicks. The sides exchanged seven scores then to go in level at the break with both sides kicking some excellent scores. Ultans efforts came from Cian Rennicks with a brace, two Tadhg Ratty frees and one each from Gearoid Rennicks, Conor Smyth and Emmet Costello. 

Clann Na Gael dominated the third quarter and outscored Ultans six points to one the Ultans score coming from a Tadhg Ratty free. Darren Kavanagh scored on the run to narrow the gap to four but Clann Na Gael pushed on with two more points to leave six again between the sides. Ronan Breslin found the net after good work but substitute Paidin Boggins and another point from Kavanagh left two between the sides. St Ultans had a late goal chance but ultimately Clann Na Gael held on for a deserved win. 

Next up for St Ultans in A League is a trip to Longwood on Saturday at 5pm.
