Enjoying the Moylagh v Clann Na nGael JFC game at Ballinlough

The curtain came down on the opening round of the Meath football championship last Sunday evening. Last year's Junior champions Meath Hill proved that they will be more than capable of holding their own in the Intermediate grade with a well-earned draw against a Mickey Newman inspired Kilmainham.

St. Ultan's won their first opening round in ten years while Moylagh took the first step in what their club supporters hope will be the road back to the Junior decider with a late win over Clann na nGael. View match reports from all games.

Here's our our best XV and manager:

1. Keith Waters (Seneschalstown)

Produced a string of fine saves in the second half to keep Skryne at bay in the Junior A opening round clash in Syddan.

2. Darren Gibney (Moylagh)

One of the best defenders in the Junior grade. Carried out his duties with great effect and popped up with the winning point deep into injury-time at Ballinlough.

3. Mickey Foley (Gaeil Colmcille)

Rolled back the years to give an exhibition against Summerhill in the JFC draw at Dunderry. Won't be too long before the experienced Foley makes his way back into the senior fold.

4. David Coleman (Wolfe Tones)

Chipped in with a fine point and another player to roll back the years with a very solid display in that comfortable JFC win over O'Mahonys at Bective.

5. Ryan Carry (Meath Hill)

A real bundle of energy down the wing for last year's Junior Championship winners. Carried the ball into attack with great effect and scored a fine point.

6. Tommy Cosgrove (Na Fianna)

The former senior star gave an exhibition at centre-back. His tussle with Simonstown's Mickey Brennan was worth the admission fee alone as Na Fianna finished with a goal to spare over the Navan side in the Junior B in Athboy.

7. Kevin Gilsenan (St Brigid's)

Started in midfield but Drumconrath had no answer to the Ballinacree star. Impressive work-rate on a soft Martry pitch. Always available to help defence and scored 1-3 in that comfortable opening round win.

8. Cian Swaine (Clann Na nGael)

Last year's Meath minor captain gave an exhibition in the middle of the park. Ended with six points to his name in their disappointing loss to Moylagh.

9. Gearoid Rennicks (St Ultan's)

The influential midfielder found the target with eight points as St Ultan's won their first opening round of the championship in ten years.

10. Sean Reilly (Moylagh)

Never fails to deliver for the north Meath club. Scored three fine points as last year's finalists got off to a winning start against Clann na nGael

11. Pierce McGrath (Meath Hill)

Scored five wonderful points, including three from play, in that brilliant second-half fightback, as last year's Junior champions and Kilmainham served up a thriller in Carlanstown.

12. Eamon O Donnchadh (Clann na nGael)

The best player on the field in that highly entertaining game at Ballinlough. Finished with an impressive 1-4 to his name.

13. Brendan McKeon (Ballivor)

The former county minor was in great form, scoring 2-5, as Ballivor comfortably defeated Kilmainhamwood in the opening round at Dunganny.

14. Mickey Newman (Kilmainham)

The ex-county star was outstanding against Meath Hill in Carlanstown. Finished with 2-8 and was a constant thorn in the side of the opposition's defence.

15. Tom Fadden (Ratoath)

Lit up the Junior C encounter with St. Michael's with an impressive tally of four goals and two points in Walterstown.

Manager Davy Cahill (Meath Hill)

Masterminded a late Meath Hill comeback which saw them come from six points down in the closing 15 minutes to secure a memorable draw with Kilmainham at Carlanstown.
