Mayo hit with EUR5,000 fine

March 26, 2008
A EUR5,000 fine has been imposed on the Mayo county board after missiles were thrown at Kerry players during the recent NFL clash in Castlebar. Kerry full forward Kieran Donaghy had coins - and a wooden spoon - thrown at him by a section of the home support during the closing stages of the game. The former Footballer of the Year, who has received a one-match ban for gesturing at the Mayo supporters, also claimed many of his team-mates were also hit by items thrown by the home fans. The Central Competitions Control Committee has also demanded that the Mayo county board install a CCTV system and create an event management plan to ensure that there will be no repeat of such incidents. Failure to do so will mean Mayo won't be allowed to host the league game against Galway at McHale Park on Sunday week. The decision to hit Mayo with such a heavy fine is believed to have been influenced by similar incidents in the past, including a game against Dublin last year. However, the size of the fine still came as a shock to the county board who are conducting their own investigation in the incidents.
