Weekend previews

February 29, 2008
We look ahead to all the NFL action this weekend and predict the likely winners and losers. Saturday, March 1st Allianz NFL Division 1 Laois v. Mayo Both sides are looking for their first win in the campaign and the loser faces the prospect of relegation even at this early stage. Laois are still coming to terms with the loss of six players from last year, while Mayo are struggling to find their form, but they might just do that on Sunday. Verdict: Mayo Division 2 Cavan v. Dublin The Breffni Blues had high hopes following their performance against Armagh, but were brought down to earth swiftly by Monaghan and the Dubs will be confident of coming away with maximum points. Verdict: Dublin Division 4 Antrim v. Offaly The top two in the division collide at Casement Park and the winner of this match is almost certain to be first in the standings when all the matches are complete. Antrim have home advantage and will provide a stern test for the Pat Roe's charges, but it is one that the Leinster County should just shade. Verdict: Offaly Sunday, March 2nd Allianz NFL Division 1 Kildare v. Donegal Donegal have left it late in both their opening matches to record wins and they must feel they are destined to retain their title at this stage. Kildare have only one point from their outings thus far and are desperate for a win. However, they may have to wait a bit longer. Verdict: Donegal Galway v. Tyrone The Tribesmen are in flying form so far this year and new manager Liam Sammon must be delighted with the start they have made to the campaign. Tyrone minus the services of a number of key players have struggled to come to terms with their loss and may well end up in Division two next year. Verdict: Galway Kerry v. Derry Derry are the form side at the moment having been greatly impressive against Mayo and Laois. On Sunday they face a huge test against the Kingdom who look to have that bit more strength in depth than their opponents. Verdict: Kerry Division 2 Roscommon v. Cork Cork finally make their bow in the NFL this weekend. After months of being on strike, it will be interesting to see how the Rebels fare. Roscommon received a huge boost when they drew with Meath and they will be hoping to build on that. However, Cork recorded a significant win over Wexford in a challenge over the weekend and there's a good chance they will get up to speed sooner rather than later. Verdict: Cork Monaghan v. Armagh In recent years, Armagh would have been red hot favourites to win this clash, but not so anymore. Monaghan have arguably being playing the best football of any team in the country at present and look set to make it three wins from three. Verdict: Monaghan Westmeath v. Meath The loss of Dessie Dolan is a huge blow to Westmeath against their neighbours. There was contrasting results for these in their last outings as the Lake County will be buoyed by an excellent win over Armagh, while Meath could only manage a draw against Roscommon. Tough one to call, but Tomas O'Flatharta's troops could record a win. Verdict: Westmeath Division 3 Sligo v. Limerick Sligo will have felt aggrieved to let two substantial leads slip in the campaign so far. They need a win and need it soon. Limerick have only played done match so far and although they won, the lack of game play could well be a set back. Verdict: Sligo Longford v. Fermanagh The weather has not been kind to Fermanagh as they have yet to play a game in the NFL. The long lay off if sure to affect them in the first few rounds and Longford could capatilise on that. Verdict: Longford Wexford v. Down It's all to play for at Wexford Park as the top two meet. Both are unbeaten and the Slayneysiders have proven to be a hard side to defeat at home. Down go into the match full of confidence, and have the players to cause the home team some problems. Verdict: Down Louth v. Leitrim Louth will be eager to pick up their first points when Leitrim pay a visit to Dundalk. The Wee County are still missing a number of first choice players and all those not seem rosy in the county. Nonetheless, they should prove too strong for Leitrim. Verdict: Louth Division 4 Tipperary v. London Tipperary should make a swift return to winning ways when the Exiles come to town. A win for the Premier County will keep them in with a shout for a top two spot. Verdict: Tipperary Waterford v. Clare A must win game for Clare and a chance to gain some degree of revenge for last year's defeat in the Munster championship. Waterford struggled against Kilkenny and will need to improve. Verdict: Clare Wicklow v. Kilkenny A decent performance against Waterford will have given Kilkenny some hope for the remainder of the campaign, but they are still a long way short of competing with the likes of Wicklow. Verdict: Wicklow
